And as Photon said, 3-4 doses for some vaccines is common. (spoiler for image size)

Spoiler!

How likely are breakthrough infections with those other vaccines? It seems like that Hepatitis vaccine is pretty solid (just choosing the first one on the list), and while it takes three shots to get that benefit, it seems strong?

With this and the vaccine passport at liquor stores - Quebec is a mess with Bill 21 but impressive dealing with anti-vax idiots.

Alberta's COVID update:
748 in hospital with 82 in icu
That's up from 708/80 yesterday
15 more deaths reported. Total: 3,367
Case numbers: (Remember most ppl no longer have access to PCR+ prov estimates numbers at least 10x higher)
6,789 new cases (17,815 tests)
61,229 active

At least it's not a 10% jump like yesterday?

Not terrible if we want to assume cases are 10x higher. Maybe 20x higher.

I've split off that discussion into a separate thread so those interested can participate there without derailing the general discussion thread.

In fact if we assume that Alberta is only catching 10% of cases and there are 60,000 COVID cases that means over 600k people in Alberta are infected right now.

Some think they aren't even catching 10% of the cases.

That means the hospitalization rate for Omicron is insanely low, though still worrisome as it could climb fast.

Pfizer’s chief executive has revealed that two doses of its current Covid-19 vaccine offer “very limited protection, if any” against the Omicron variant.

Albert Bourla made the comments in an interview with Yahoo Finance after the company announced a new Omicron-specific version of the vaccine would be ready by March, with doses already being manufactured.

“We know that the two doses of the vaccine offer very limited protection, if any,” Dr Bourla said.

Well that just isn't true, but hey I guess you gotta keep driving fear & sales.

Two doses offers spectacular protection for a BIG part of the population. 3 doses offers great protection for those at risk.

Why is it so hard to admit?

I think he's referring to infection. Then again, maybe not.. Strange.

How much more clear does he have to be?

"very limited protection, IF ANY."

complete bloody lie.

“We know that the two doses of the vaccine offer very limited protection, if any,” Dr Bourla said.

“The three doses with a booster, they offer reasonable protection against hospitalisation and deaths – against deaths, I think, very good, and less protection against infection. Now we are working on a new version of our vaccine, the 1.1, let me put it that way, that will cover Omicron as well. Of course we are waiting to have the final results, [but] the vaccine will be ready in March.”

He went on to say

“We have seen with a second dose very clearly that the first thing that we lost was the protection against infections,” Bourla said. “But then two months later, what used to be very strong in hospitalization also went down. And I think this is what everybody’s worried about.”

This is the problem with this type of stuff. He's saying protection against hospitalization went down, and it likely did, but the wording makes it sound like he's saying they don't work at all, when clearly that isn't the case. I find that scientists/doctors do this kind of thing frequently.

Well yeah. But as the CEO of the company at the forefront of this, saying stupid #### like that is why people distrust you.

We're trying to build trust in the vaccines.

They work. Clearly. Go get vaccinated.

But no, gotta drive some fear into the populace first. "OMG they don't work, get another shot" even though that clearly isn't the case.

The biggest argument I have with anti-vaxxers is their belief that the vaccines don't work anyways and 'have fun getting a shot every 3 months.'

We know that isn't true at all. So why suggest that it is?

Manitoba health officials say every person in the province will likely be exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19 sometime in the coming weeks, and the government will shift its focus away from trying to limit the spread of the disease.

"COVID-19 is no longer an emerging illness," said Dr. Jazz Atwal, deputy chief provincial public health officer.

"It is here to stay, and our ability to contain the virus is limited. It is highly likely that everyone will be exposed to the virus in the coming weeks."

Well it’s because we can’t stop it. It’s a cold and despite the restrictions we have currently, it’s spreading very quickly. It’s futile.

I think this is key.

The virus changed, in order to stop it now would require a stronger lockdown then 2020 and then lockdown until vaccines come out. We have evidence from several countries that Swedening ourselves is a tolerable outcome to this wave in terms of death.

This idea that people suddenly changed camps and the restriction nazis are being more reasonable just isn’t valid. The risk and ability to combat the disease changed. Policy changed with it.
