I can't recall where I heard it (a podcast somewhere), but apparently the initial idea was for the spring champion was supposed to represent the CanPL in the Concacaf league. Which would have made perfect sense.
But throw in a few variables like... Concacaf, the CSA, Forge, etc. and we got the little charade of a qualification process between Forge, Valour, and Edmonton. And the chosen ones were chosen.

A bit awkward?!
It was the dumbest thing I've ever witnessed in pro sports (thankfully I never witnessed the NASL). Cavalry was punished for winning both "seasons" by having to play a playoff.
That disgusted me so much I almost swore off the CanPL.
If they did away with those shenanigans, I will be pleased to attend more matches this season.

It could very likely be operated differently with other clubs but I don't use the Arsenal Away Coach service as it drops you off outside the ground right before the match and sets off not long after it's over. As such, you miss quite a bit of the atmosphere before and after the match. The pints and sing-songs in the town centre are a big part of Away Days for me.

I'm not expecting the club to sort out a bus for away trips.

True. I think a lot of that stems from the old culture of drunkards starting trouble in the streets before the matches. On one trip to Hull, we were basically escorted to and from the buses and had complete separation from the home supporters. Stoke, on the other hand, we arrived early, got to wander freely around the grounds, mingle with the locals, had some food and pints, etc. But what would Stoke and Norwich fans have to argue about? Who is closer to the bottom of the table?
All Sherm has to do is be like "Alright, Tommy. Bus departs at 9am. 2 hour stop at (insert an Edmonton pub here). Match. Celebratory beer and/or cake afterwards. Drive back. Piss break at Gasoline Alley. Back at Rose & Crown by 7pm."

Would it be too much to get a bus organized by the Foot Soilers?
IIRC a 56 person bus, with bathroom and entertainment system is 'only' $1400 for the day.
That would be 30 bucks a seat, if you only expected 46 people. Still cheaper then a tank of gas.

I am sure we could fill a bus, but organizing everything is a different story. You'd be surprised how much a pain in the ass it is organizing busses, even the free busses we did last year. Not to mention the step of fronting the costs, especially since we spent every penny on merch in the offseason and are about $700 in the hole as a group.
We're getting some quotes either way, but personally I'd rather just have everyone carpool like last year.

Absolutley, I could see making sure everyone is on getting there and leaving being a pain in the ass. Not to mention no one wants to be the person telling people to calm down and shut up when they decide to play the megaphone siren for 20 minutes straight .
I mean I wouldn't volunteer to be in charge.

^ And although I wouldn't expect the club to arrange it either, they could perhaps use their relationship with Red Arrow and get a good rate for the Foot Soldiers.
I think the big thing would be that an individual would be taking on the risk. If the match were calcelled/postponed, something fell through, or people flaked on their commitment to go, that's on someone's credit card. Probably Shermanator's. But I think that there are ways to reduce the risk (deposits, pre-selling bus tickets, etc.)

Do the Foot Soilers have a bank account. Because selling 'tickets' in advance would be the best way to minimize risk. That way you could also incorporate a liability waiver that makes it clear that missing the bus is your own risk ect...
That said, the everyone organizing and driving up themselves last year seemed to work well enough.

Nope, we've been using the honour system of having the money in an envelope on my desk, and tracking on Google sheets. Which has worked great even with me pissing it all away on booze spending it all on new merch.
We have a good system for now but it's reached the limit of how scalable it can go. Setting up a bank account would help with selling tickets to things like this online, or setting up an online shop for merch.

Do you have not for profit status? It may be time to make the dive and get a board of directors and everything.

Eventually we have to look at formalizing the group a little more, including the not-for-profit status, board member elections, membership fees (which would basically just be guaranteed merch sales), bank accounts, etc. I imagine we will be at that stage next offseason, just need to take the plunge.

A well-placed source tells me that Dominique Malonga is once again looking for a club after his proposed move to China fell through. Return to Cavalry is not out of the question. #CanPL
TBH, am I wrong in saying I'm not sure the Cavs need him anymore considering everyone they've acquired in the off-season?

I'm sure Malonga would be useful but I don't see him coming back with the way the team is set up at forward and midfield. We have like 5 defenders signed. Something has to give there.
We must be nearing the cap for international players as well.
Mavila, Luca, Minatel, Brown, Escalante. What's the limit? 7 I think?

Valour have sold Tyler Attardo to a Chilean club.
https://canpl.ca/article/valour-fc-s...NUl0FFLyJiQClA
Quote:
Valour FC announced on Thursday that Tyler Attardo has been transferred to Chilean second-division club C.D. Arturo Fernández Vial for an undisclosed fee.
The first CPL player to be sold to a South America club, Attardo initially drew interest from Valour after excelling in the Winnipeg open trials as a 16-year-old in the buildup to the 2019 season.
|
No word on how much he sold for, but good for him and the CPL I guess. Interesting that a South American club/league was scouting the CPL.
Valour were pretty crap last year, and now they've lost all their good players in Bustos, Petrasso, Beland-Goyette and now Attardo. Fully expect them to be even worse this year.

Apparently this is a way to work around the transfer deadline by selling him to the Chilean team and then having them sell to a European team. I really don't understand how that works and don't care enough to figure it out. Sounds like it's a case of the player's agent having connections in Chile more than the Chilean team being interested.

Yes, the limit is 7. I think 5 can play at the same time. I don't really see how Malonga fits right now with our current attacking options. With Brown, Cordova, Luca, Escalante, Pasquotti, Pepple, Minatel, Camargo and Hernandez we aren't short of attacking players.
So far there are 18 players confirmed to be signed of the 23 players limit. That does not include the 2 U Sports draft picks (Bitar and El Gandour) or the rumoured incoming players Farsi and Simmons. I think Serban and Hamilton would be a better use of roster spots than Malonga right now.
