The Oilers have so many more fans that they had to start breaking them down into tiers.

There aren’t a ton of reasons to be hyped about the Calgary Flames in the last 30 years, especially if you don’t have a connection to this town.

But they’re ours. That’s what makes them special.
If we're talking the window of the last 30 years, the Oilers have had probably less reasons to be hyped in regard to success.

I guess McDavid in the regular season is a reason now if you're into highlight reel speed and one guy putting up lots of points, even though they still stink it up either in the standings or after April.

Team 80s/Gretzky won more of rural alberta over for sure. But the Flames are, needless to say, infinitely cooler and much less of a tire fire. Edmonton has many, many more 20-21 Flames type seasons under their belt.

Oilers fans are more passionate and they will definitely show if off
You walk around Edmonton, you would probably see 2/10 ppl with some sort of Oilers apparel
You walk around Calgary, and you would probably see 2/10 will have Oilers gear as well!

Let alone you see more cars rock the Oilers License plates

In Calgary I've hardly seen any oiler license plates. I see a Flames one about 1-3 times a day though.

I see them too and want to trash talk them but you can't really do that these days so I just "accidentally" whizz a puck or two past their heads.

I did tell my neighbors kid that he needs counseling though.

Like real Flames fan, not a single one. The dome was a library and the team was on the verge of moving. Oilers fans were everywhere and outnumbered Flames fans at the Saddledome and around the city.

There were more fans of the Big Bang Theory than there were fans of Breaking Bad.

Its Oiler fans for sure. A lot more of them...Think they have a pretty good monopoly on everything north of Red Deer to be honest.

Although they have never been more quiet than the last couple of weeks. Rather enjoyable.

Well, okay, but that is anecdotal at best. You say this with such certainty like the rest of us weren't around at that time. I assure you, your experience back then was not the norm.

I would almost say anywhere south of Red Deer is Flames country and anything north is Oilers country. Red Deer is likely half and half or slightly tilted towards the Oilers.

I think you are simplifying the history here although possibly fair based on your age and peer group at the time

Edmonton and Calgary went through similar (slightly offset) cycles in the early 90s to 00s after having owned the decade of the 80s

the Oilers plummeted first- like they went from relevant to horrible , fast. they were a 60 point team all of a sudden in the early 90s- I lived in Edmonton then -and the rink was empty , was full of Flames fans when Calgary came to town and the team was on verge of moving- that doesn't mean there weren't die hard Oiler fans in Edmonton then- we know this to be true- but they had lost their mojo. young kids were finding new favorite teams. The Flames at this point were still good (it seemed) with solid regular seasons , but playoff failures (sigh) , but they were about to drop off a cliff

by the time the Flames were sucking the Oilers had become this sort of plucky make the playoffs and try and do some damage , always running into the Dallas Stars kind of group so by the late 90s/early 00s they were holding their heads up higher than we were

but at no time were there no real Flames fans in Calgary- hell that's why there are so many old dudes like me on CP!

I wouldn't be surprised if it's 70-30 in favor of Oilers fans in the province. I would say it's probably 50-50 in southern alberta but northern Alberta 80% Oilers fans. Even in Calgary you don't see nearly the Flames flags or people wearing Flames merchandise compared to Edmonton.
