“I was pushing for (a new contract) in the summer and talking to my agent (J.P. Barry) then, but things got a little crazy with everything that was going on before the season started. All the (Jaromir) Jagr situation and, ‘who is going to stay and who is going to go,’ and all that – I know Tre (Flames GM Brad Treliving) was busy. It was a busy time.”
Word around the league has been that the 28-year-old centre is seeking the same six-year deal worth $6 million annually Kyle Turris signed in November.
However, a source familiar with the situation said Backlund’s ask is closer to $5 million annually over five or six years, which is much more in line with what the Flames can manage

Wow, hadn't heard those comments from Backlund before. Sounds like he will definitely remain a Flame. Even 6 years at $5mil is a lot but I could handle that.
Sounds like good news. $5 mil is completely reasonable for the now.
The last 2 years of that deal might hurt a touch, but that's only assuming his game declines in year 3 or 4 and it is by no means a certainty that he does.
Funny this is coming out now though and coincides with his play has dropping off the last couple weeks - could be because the contract talks are distracting him.
Wouldn't be shocked if something gets announced over all-star weekend.

I have said it before but Backlund really loves being a flame. He is a flame to the core and I think that he will definitely be here for his next long contract. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he retired here

That sounds like a completely reasonable ask. Backlund strikes me as thr type that woulsnt put up a fight for cash. Give him whats fair and hed love to stay.
5x5 seems like a great deal for both. This is where Treliving shines
DO IT

I assume he wants 6 years. He'll be 29 after this season so he will be making $5M until he's 36. Stajan is 34, Versteeg is 31 and Brouwer is 32.
Backlund making $5M at 34-36 could be a liability.
Backlund is also better currently than any of those players ever were.

Whats the catch? You'd think if that was all this would be done by now.
People like to say things like this, but I am guessing this is a massive oversimplification of the entire negotiation process. There is more than simply term and money to consider when putting together a deal, and like Backlund said, Treliving is juggling all sorts of issues that interfere with being able to sit down and work them all out with JP Barry.
