Damn Avs. Go away.

Wonder why NYI wanted to trade him? I know they need some cap room but he’s a solid player.

Isles learning about the perils of terrible UFA signings the hard way.

$8m for Pageau and Komarov.

Joe Sakic does it again.

Holy s*** that guy needs to be banned from hockey so the rest of the league stands a chance.

When's the last time he made a move that didn't look like an immediate win??

Probably when a lot of fans thought he was the worst GM in the league - which wasn't that long ago.

Sakic makes his moves when he wants to, not when fans and players want the changes. Yzerman same way.

It's actually ridiculous how dominant the Avs are looking.

Being serious, is Joe Sakic a better GM than he was a hockey player? His last couple years specifically have been phenomenal. Like Jesus I love every move that guy makes.

Until they shore up the goaltending situation, I don't see them dominating anything to be honest.

Also, watching the Avs a lot over the last couple years, I sense they are missing some jam to their lineup, which wasn't addressed at all by trading away Zadorov.

Not knocking any of Sakic's moves, just don't see the Avs as any kind of powerhouse.

They have a great analytics staff in Colorado that Sakic listens to.

Really good pick up of a 26 year old who is a strong all around dman.

The Avs are basically what the oilers would be if they were built by a slightly competent GM. They can fly but their defence is still a bit suspect. Grubauer has to prove he’s a legit starter who can stay healthy for a year. If they can get both of those fixed they’ll be dominant but for now they’ll stay as a lot of flash that racks ups points. They should be doing anything and everything they can do to get pietroangelo in there that would be massive.

Joe Sakic is a genius. He’s patient, calculated and decisive.

Girard - Johnson
Toews - Makar
Graves - Cole

That is a great defence, and the Avs have Timmins and Byram in the system.

If they get a goalie, watch out. I predict they get MAF.

I mean, the scary thought is that they could realistically get better in net, but last year they had the 3rd highest 5v5 Save Percentage in the league with Grubauer and Francouz both ranking in the top 20 in the NHL for GSAA.

Francouz had a very rough playoffs after Grubauer got hurt, but overall their goaltending wasn't a problem at all.

Toews is a significantly better D-man than Zadorov, not to mention the incoming talent of Byram and Timmins

I am not entirely sold on Toews. Trots has a way of making defensemen look competent.

Also, Zadorov out, and Toews in. I don't see where creaming over Sakic is warranted here, but ok.

Is Devon Toews really that good though?

Two 2nd rounders seems like a lot for him to me. If the 2014 draft was re-done in hindsight, I could see him being drafted in the 2nd round I guess, but there are still some decent free agents out there too that are probably at his level and could be had for cheap.

Yes. Devon Toews is a very good top-pairing defenseman who's only 26. Don't see anyone like that on the market right now.

RFA compensation for him is right around either a 2nd, or a 1st and 3rd. If he is signing for $4.3mil plus, this is a great trade.

So the Islanders who were screwed and were not going to be able to match Toes arbitration award and risked losing him for nothing were still able to get two 2nd rounders for him. Makes sense, there is always a team willing to give up assets to definitely get the good player.

I would argue that because Toews played for the Islanders, he's very underrated. The guy is a stud:

https://twitter.com/user/status/1315754372295462912

In his two years in the league, his relative stats are as follows:

(Left = 2018-19, Right = 2019-20)

CF%: 6.35/5.06
FF%: 6.22/4.73
SF%: 6.79/4.80
SCF%: 4.89/6.41
HDCF%: 6.36/5.36
xGF%: 8.53/5.12

That's on top of ranking as a top pair/middle-pair with his offensive rates. At the very least, Toews is an elite #3 D-man.

Again, the guy is a stud.

Does Devon Toews move the needle that much? I get their need for some veteran help on the blueline, but is he it? I don't know.

I think it is a somewhat risky deal for Colorado as well. He is a very good defenseman, and he is eligible for arbitration. I am also pretty sure he is a UFA after this season. I could be wrong though. It comes down to the ability of Colorado to extend Towes long term, despite him only having two seasons in the league.

If we consider that it is Colorado's window to win, then Towes definitely fits that for this year.
