What a character.

When baseball was simpler and had a plethora of personalities, he was certainly one of the bigger ones.

Over 3000 games as a manager...not sure we will ever see that again.

Lots of connections to Montreal- from the Royals, to Blue Monday, to Youppi

Yep, definitely a character, and, given that he didn't exactly come across as a poster boy for healthy living, 93 is a good show. Reminds me of my father (88 yo), who wakes up at 1 am to fry himself some sausages.

Him winning the Olympics with a bunch of non-prospect minor leaguers was an underrated achievement.

Also Youppi!

I watched that Youppi game more or less in its entirety. summer of 89 and the Expos to many's surprise were more competitive than expected (they ended up mortgaging the future to get Mark Langston to help with the push)

the game started around 530 in Calgary. it was midweek but it was summer time, I was a teenager and wasn't working the next day....830 or 9 rolls round- time to go to the bar, game is going to extra innings- no worries I'll find out who won when I get there ...arrive on 11th ave somewhere- game is actually playing on the bar TVs...still on...for another 2 or 3 hours!

Future expo John Wetteland got the win. it was a pitching duel Hershiser against Pascual Perez, Fernando (always associate him with Lasorda) appeared in the game but as a pinch hitter. Dennis Martinez mopped up and took the loss for the expos after giving up a home run to Rick Dempsey, the only run on 33 hits

The expos outfield that day consisted of Dave Martinez flanked by Larry Walker and Tim Raines

There were also no walks. Still a record.
