Soundtracks - looking for assembled compilations or scores?

Shaft and Superfly were pretty great from Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield
Pulp Fiction was pretty cool

As for scores -
John Williams has some iconic themes with which you can’t argue
Morricone has plenty. Maybe not what everyone would expect but The Mission is very good.

That’s just a few off the top of my head, but there are a ton of both categories

Singles had a great soundtrack. Essentially wall to wall with the best Seattle had to offer at the time. Plus Paul Westerberg. I'm pretty sure I owned the CD long before I saw the movie and it got played non stop through my university years.

i really liked the backdraft soundtrack - especially the main instrumental song for the movie:

For scores I still have to go with Williams and Star Wars (IV, V, VI) as my number one. Just so many amazing tracks in them.

Requiem for a Dream with Kronos Quartet, pairs amazingly with that movie. Shivers.

Soundtracks, ones that come into my head right away are Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. Snatch, and Kill Bill Vol. 1.

Saturday Night Fever, of course.

When younger, I loved the movie "The Commitments" and it's a great soundtrack.

Another classic soundtrack is Bull Durham. The Blasters are an amazing band, to name just one.

Judgement Night kicked - and still kicks - major ass.

Every song was a collaboration with hip-hop artists and grunge/rock bands. It's so fataing good.

Blues Brothers

It's on the verge of being a musical but not quite IMO.

The whole soundtrack is great but the live performances are amazing. Ray Charles, Aretha, James Brown, Cab Calloway plus the Blues Brothers themselves.

Last of the Mohicans probably has one of the better instrumental soundtracks ever.

GordonBlue’s shout to The Commitments seconded.

Purely commercial (and old!) Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, actually probably most of John Hughes’ films, Footloose, Back to the Future.

There’s definitely a period where movies almost had to have the summer hit single.

Kenny Loggins had his share of hits this way. Besides the ones above, also Caddyshack with “i’m alright” were themes for that timeline.

The answer is Forrest Gump.

Also The Show (which I think is kind of cheating because I feel like it was made as an excuse to make a soundtrack)

Honorable Mentions:
The Crow
The Commitments

Hans Zimmer is hands down my favourite composer of all time. He's just an absolute master. I think my favourite score of his is Gladiator, but to be honest most of his scores pack an emotional punch. The Nolan Batman movies, Interstellar, Inception, Dunkirk. Those two obviously work well together, but even fun, dumb movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, Man of Steel, Dune etc. are all incredible. I mean, Mission Impossible II is a terrible movie by all other standards, but the score by Hans Zimmer almost makes it worth watching.
