In order to make the playoffs, you need to be good all year long.

But it's better to enter the playoffs on a hot streak, than to start off the season strong and play mediocre hockey through the middle and end of regular season.

Here's the top 2 centre scoring totals for the last handful of cup champs.

2018 Caps: 160 pts
2017 Pens: 161 pts
2016 Pens: 143 pts (Malkin missed 25 games)
2015 Hawks: 103 pts (Jennings trophy)
2014 Kings: 126 pts (Jennings trophy)
2013 Hawks: 116 pt pace (lockout half season / Jennings trophy)
2012 Kings: 120 pts (add Jeff Carter at deadline)

You ain't going to win the cup unless you've either got two 75-85 point centres or the stingiest team defense in the entire league.

The Flames have neither.

Suggests to me the course of action is acquire one of the best centres in the league, because I don't think you're ever going to have the stingiest team defense with a roster containing both gaudreau and monahan. I just don't think it's possible.

Teams that can find their playoff mojo can really take off. It is fascinating to watch teams get a bounce or that play that lets their confidence build. Next thing you know they feel like Dak and are ready to take on the Empire by themselves.

Of course, each of those teams acquired their top centres through the draft, usually high picks. Backstrom, Crosby, Malkin, Toews were all top 3 and Kopitar and Carter were 11th. Kuznetsov was 26th. And, of course, Washington and Chicago also had first overall picks as wingers as well, Pittsburgh had a first overall goalie, and LA had a number 2 overall defenceman.

So is the course of action to tank?

Neither do Boston or St Louis.

The Blues only have 2 players with more than 54 points.

Seems all is right.
This Oilers fan is correct, I think.

TBF, they are both top 5 in team defence.

The Flames were 9th, and 2nd in offence, with Cs having 130+ points. And 5 players above 70 points.

What's the post ASG split on that? Or even post new year?

OK, post NY, Calgary was still 9th in GA and was a very close 6th in GF (one behind 4/5 and 2 behind 3). Blues were 3rd in GA and Bruins were 6th, so pretty close to where they wound up.

ETA: Top 2 Cs had 60+ points combined and there were 5 players above 30.

I know the second the Flames start getting bigger. They'll start calling the playoffs with more regard towards the actual rules of hockey.

For me it's all skill and will, but size is obviously always a good thing if it's not slow. We need a few more players that will give it all in the playoffs and drag everyone behind them.

Patience, give him time, young guys get better, he is a center (LOL)

New coach, way better opportunities...same results.

Just wait though...he will get better!!

I dont get it.

Does he have a role on this team? Absolutely. He is a 3rd line RW with some good ole truculence in his game. We need one and he is one...whats the problem with that? Cant pay him more than that "hoping" he will pop and become something more than he is though. You have to pay him for what he is..because what he is is what he himself has shown himself to be.

This didnt age well...

Some people have different view points and that is okay too. I think he has some good intangibles, but most have accepted that never live up to his draft billing. Sam can still be an important part of the team "if paid accordingly". Nothing wrong with those that hold out hope.

So you DO want to pay him for more than he is?

Makes sense.

That every team that wins is DIFFERENT.

That becomes the norm, OMG St Louis BIG = GOOD

Anaheim - must have Norris D
Chicago - puck possession, who needs goalie lol
Boston - you must be mean and have depth, yea and a hot goalie
Pittsburg - lol no defence only offence needed
LA - big, defence and yay goalie is important again
Caps - err not sure yet

So, it’s different every year. Every team is different, except for two things - they’re good and they get good goaltending.
