I actually was just thinking about this and I'm glad the pandemic forced them to wait this long. Gave AEW time to build up some new stars who aren't The Elite and gave NJPW time to build new guys to fill the void left by The Elite.
This could be a lot of fun if booked right. Would be awesome if Gedo and Callis can take Tony Khan under their wings a bit in terms of booking.

The Kenta business kind of overshadowed the fact that the women's eliminator tournament looks like its going to be absolutely awesome with all of the Japanese talent they're bringing in for it.

More good news on the NJPW front. They have a new UK/US/Canada TV deal through Roku.

Quote:
“New Japan Pro-Wrestling Co., Ltd. (NJPW) today announced a partnership with Roku, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROKU) to bring NJPW content to The Roku Channel in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The eponymous New Japan Pro-Wrestling, a one-hour weekly series featuring the athletic action of the world’s preeminent pro-wrestling organization, will air episodes featuring top matches and events that have yet to air on television outside of Japan.
Premiering February 11, episodes of New Japan Pro-Wrestling will air every Thursday beginning at 5 pm on The Roku Channel, and will be available on-demand thereafter. Additionally, The Roku Channel will host a block of library content, featuring key highlights from the 2020 NJPW catalogue, with potential for the introduction of more historical content in the future.
Availability on The Roku Channel makes NJPW the first pro-wrestling company to call an AVOD service home. As pro-wrestling fans increasingly seek out new platforms to watch content, the partnership brings the Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s “Promotion of the Year” for the last eight consecutive years to North American and U.K. audiences at a major level for free.”

And the "forbidden door" is officially open, but we'll likely have to wait until the pandemic is over before we see guys like Okada, Ibushi, etc. This is really an exciting time to be a wrestling fan.

It's interesting, with Harold Meij now gone from NJPW, we're seeing more movement on NJPW incursion into U.S. households - whether through broadcasting rights such as this, NJPW Gaijin talent showcasing (e.g. NJPW STRONG and social media coverage), or by crossover content with AEW (and likely some level of future crossover with Impact as their relationship improves).
I thought they were going to turn inwards again from international "forbidden door" activity but it looks like Takami Ohbari, who was the CEO of NJPW America, is just as focused on international growth as on the domestic Japanese market. You can see this with them also working with former WWE guys with name value recently, including Lio Rush, Darren Young, and PJ Black (Justin Gabriel). I believe Danny Limelight is also AEW-bound (NJPW STRONG).
The U.S. dojo has been making some seriously good gains too with their talent crop. Katsuyori Shibata has been a key player in getting a quality group of Young Lions on the scene.
If NJPW, AEW and Impact all work together for cross-promotional work, it could change the way fans approach promotions in the Western market. All three promotions could mutually benefit from cross-show storylines and matchups, as well as promoting dream matches (and the associated merchandising opportunities).
Curious to see where this goes.

I'm pumped. I was big into NJPW before AEW started up and I still think it's the best promotion in the world right now when it comes to pure wrestling. It just sucks that their streaming service has such a lousy UI and they don't do a great job of advertising their events, so I often forget when it's on (especially with the time difference).

Messaging him now (we don't live in the same city anymore and mostly only chat about random stuff not, you know, important life stuff)

It's his too.
If he was given the opportunity to call Wrestle Kingdom or Wrestlemania, he'd take Wrestle Kingdom 7 days a week and twice on Sundays.
He's been to Japan a few times with NJPW, and at least once for their tour down through the southern US.

Butch Reed passes away at 66. A seriously under rated worker, and part of one of the best tag teams that I've ever seen in Doom
