Sometimes I can’t tell if Norm is being genuine. Reading those quotes makes me think he could just as easily be taking shots at Eddie Murphy. I don’t think he is though.
I can see why you may think that, given the quotes I selected
If you read the linked article, to get the context, I expect you will take them as genuine.
He has a lot of admiration for Eddie

My PVR recorded the replay of the Christmas episode from 1998 (Alec Baldwin hosting, the Schweaty Balls episode). Some parts of it were wild. It was around the time of Clinton's impeachment, so very similar themes and jokes around that. A joke about the impending doom due to climate change.
But the best one was during the monologue, Jimmy Fallon came on as a ghost of SNL hosts future and made a joke about how he becomes a huge star and hosts the Christmas episode I. 2011...which he did.
yeah I had the same observations- I was struck about the actual use of the term climate change in 98 as it wasn't (as I remember it) an ever present concern at that time (not to say people weren't aware of or worried about the general idea)- the Fallon stuff was just kinda eerie- and boy did he look young
I remember watching that episode on first airing quite vividly . a few pretty famous sketches (White like me, Black history minute) and some classic Murphy characters Broadway Gumby Rose, Mr. Robinsons Christmas, Buckwheat lives
but I remember really cracking up for some reason at the Heisman sketch- with Murphy as Desmond Tutu who ends up breaking Flutie's Heisman trophy when they are both guests on the same talk show
would love it if that's the hour long rerun they air tomorrow night in advance of the new episode

I really enjoyed seeing Eddie bringing back some old favorite characters like Gumby, Mr Robinson and Velvet Jones. The baking challenge was fun.
Probably the best skit was the news update with Gumby as you can tell he was just improvising and had them breaking up.
That cold open though was really bad and just not really all that good, part of me is hoping that SNL tries to do other things then the same old political stuff, it feels like its run its course.

Yeah, it's become stupid. The cold open is basically "Here's our weekly political commentary and making sure we're on top of the latest federal politics" skit.

My absolute favourite was the pre-recorded Christmas toast skit with relatives sitting around the dinner table and Murphy/Rudolph reminiscing about each one of his toast lines. I don't remember last time I laughed so hard with tears.
Interesting fact: in 2018 Christmas episode hosted by Matt Damon, there was a very similar pre-recorded skit with Damon and Strong; featuring almost the same humour, same ideas, same flashbacks; but more toned down and politically correct; thus, not nearly as funny. Plus, Murphy and Rudolph actually can get away saying "you damn right, we are racist!" about their daughter dating a white boy.

Thought it was an awesome episode. Lizzo was great, Murphy sure did look lie he was having fun. Honestly I think the first time I have laughed at a Gumby sketch
Some record company is really pushing Lizzo, probably start hearing her at hockey games like Billy Eilish. I don't really get the hype, but what do I know. I like Culture Club.
