If he busts out then it's the wrong move clearly, as making another million in space this summer would be much less expensive than giving him $5M or more per year on his next deal compared to say the $3.75M or so they may have gotten done on a five year deal this week.
And I'm not predicting or stating that as a fact.
It's just the risk of going shorter term.
If he takes a step back then it flips to the team having gotten it right. That's the bet.
There's no right and wrong today.
Comparing this deal to a 5 x $3.75M deal...
2 x $2,425 = $4,850
5 x $3.750 = $18,750
so the remaining 3 years are worth $$13,900 or $4.633M per year
Will his next contract be worth more than $4.6M? Maybe, maybe not. It certainly isn't a slam dunk though.
And if it is - if he earns a big payday in 2 years then, great! Everybody wins.
I don't think many people will object to the idea that the Tanev contract is one year too long. I suspect the problem is that he wasn't signing here for a 3 year contract so the question becomes what would have been the alternative?
As for Mangiapane, I'd have signed for as long as possible but like Tkachuk last year, there is no room to do so.
Well I would have preferred Barrie or Vatanen. Both better players and will sign shorter, cheaper contracts. I'll happily be proven wrong, but I don't love the way Tanev's stats were trending in Vancouver, and his injury history is just gross.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not calling this a mistake or a screw up.
He may flat line, the league may have to reduce the salary cap making all players worth less. Many things can go wrong making a longer term deal risky.
But I put Mangiapane with Andersson as guys that seem to be worth that risk.
Tell us what you think a long term deal would have looked like. I mean sure, I could sit here and say 6 years at $3M would have been great. But Mangiapane isn't signing that.
Let's here some reasonable proposals (because you are all going to be saying in two years "I said all along we should have given him a long term contract in 2020").
So tell us. Also, tell us how that would have been handled, cap-wise.
I would have liked to see the Andersson deal with slightly less AAV. Would he have signed that? I'm not sure.
Point being the Flames having dead cap tied up in Brouwer and Stone prevented them from even having the option of doing that.
I like Lucic, but his cap hit is also quite the killer of flexibility.

Fair point. I'd say a totally reasonable answer to Tanev wanting 4 years was to simply leave the offer at 3 years, take it or leave it and then move to a different plan. This team does make a lot of decisions as if they are a current contender. This would be an example.
