Happy to do what he could at a difficult time for the organization, Conroy borrowed Mark Giordano’s skates in Buffalo and helped run drills, offered feedback and provided encouragement. He even stayed late to team up with Gelinas for a two-on-two grudge match with the healthy scratches, which he claims to have won in Buffalo despite ill-fitting Bauers.

His takeaways?

“You kind of remember when you played and think, ‘well, it was only 2010-11,’ but so much had changed really,” chuckled the former Flames captain and 1,000-game man, who is now 48.

“Especially the first game, the pace blew me away, and how much quicker it is than from above. I had never seen an iPod on the bench; they’re changing skate blades bam-bam-bam; they’re changing gloves like crazy. I wore my gloves all game. We used to come in after and dry them. Now they’re flying all over the guys’ heads.

The Flames assistant GM has simply finished a two-game stint at ice level, where he was asked to spend the last nine days huddled up with the coaches as an observer and helping hand.

Every day brought forth a new lesson.

For instance, the other night during warmup. “Funny story,” he said. “I brought my phone on the bench. And Marty asked me how old one of the players was. And I was like, ‘Oh, let me look.’ And he’s like, ‘You can’t bring your phone out here!’ I’m like, ‘Why not?’ And he goes, ‘It’s an unwritten rule.’ But I always have the phone with me.”

He laughs. “I leave it in the room now. I don’t bring it.”

“(Assistant coach) Marty (Gelinas) goes, ‘How old is (that player)?’” recalled Conroy. “I said, ‘I think he’s either 23 or 24?’ And I bring out my phone, to look it up . . . He goes, ‘You can’t do that! Put your phone away.’ I didn’t know it wasn’t allowed. So I got back into the (dressing room) and was like, ‘Oh, he’s 24’ and then put my phone away. (Marty)’s like, ‘Craig, imagine if you got a call . . . ‘

However, Flames general manager Brad Treliving knew he was in desperate need of lightening the mood. So, he asked Conroy, who lives in a perpetual state of positivity and sunshine, to help out and join the coaching staff on the bench and ice for a few days.

“He said, ‘Bring a little . . . you know . . . whatever you bring,’” Conroy said. “Whatever that is, I said I’ll do it.”

Conroy, like he always does, brought it.

In a pair of Mark Giordano’s skates, no less.

Having worked for and with personalities like Conroy I know just how lucky the Flames are to have him in the organization.
