Bill Peters will be coaching in Russia within the next two years.

What I find interesting about this is the dominoes that had to fall for this to happen.
In order
1. Leafs off to a bad start
2. Babcock canned
3. Initial tweets from Commodore on Babcock (expected)
4. Follow up tweet from Commodore on Peters (not expected)
5. Tweet from Aliu
And away we go....
Leafs don't get off to a bad start, none of this happens, at least now.
And based on what we have learned about Peters in the last few days, I'm glad it has. it is horrible stuff, but best to have it removed from your team and organization and move on.
And if it sparks a larger culture change even better.
The poor start from the Leafs may end up being a catalyst for some pretty big things.

Have to remember, in this particular instance anyhow, Peters was not employed in/by the NHL, it was a decade ago, and he was with an entirely different organization.

How does that work, though? It has been my impression that coaches and hockey ops staffers in the AHL club are installed by the NHL club, and report directly to them. Do AHL coaches sign NHL contracts?

True, it happened. But "what about Trudeau" has literally zero bearing on the NHL or this situation with Bill Peters so it gets a little tiring.

Just stop. This thread is not about Justin Trudeau, and these sorts of drive-by responses are irrelevant and unhelpful. Feel free to move it to the OTF.

Lets all give thanks to the Leafs being ####.

Ya I think that would put doubt on the validity of contracts for everyone if they did that.
Peters is going to get paid his money.

It is interesting how it all started and hopefully it does help with a culture change in hockey. I guess this means Toronto really is the centre of the universe.

Theres a really important lesson in all of this about the power of speech. One word, a six letter word, said 10 years ago can have a massive impact to the point it can cause hostilities between unlikely parties.
The one word Peters uttered so long ago has single handedly divided a fan base.
Next time someone claims free speech, I hope they remember this controversy and the power their speech has.

Do you think so?
It seems to me that—here at CP, at least—opinions about Peters and about his behaviour in the incident in question have been resoundingly unified, save for a handful of dissenters.

Seems odd.
If an NHL coach sexually abused teen boys in the 90s or was a white supremacist and that came to light only while he was an NHL coach, would the NHL just say welp, can't do nothing about that!
I would imagine Bettman could just wave his commissioner wand and declare that individual is a detriment to the image of the NHL and terminate him.

Or maybe he'll call up Eric Francis again and send him another letter addressed to Brad Treliving.
No, I suspect we won't hear from Peters for awhile or if we do it will be fairly bland comments. If there's a settlement one of the conditions would most likely be that he cannot say anything that damages the Flames' reputation.

Free speech grants you the right to say what you want. It does not grant you immunity from the fallout of said things you wanted to say.
