The thing that makes the Oilers start so much better is how buttery soft their schedule has been so far. That said I'm fully expecting an Oilers win because Carolina is awful

0-0 after 1 period between Philly and Florida. 5 on 5 was dominated by the Panthers, but the Flyers put a ton of shots on net on their 2 power plays to make this game look closer than it really has been.
Also, if you were wondering where Ville Nieminen is these days, I just saw a segment on Fox Sports showing him doing some special training sessions with Barkov, as I guess they have a special relationship. Nieminen still looks built...very strong. Still looks insane too. Miss that guy.
The clip isn't posted on their site, but I'll try and find it soon.

Will Butcher with assist #9 already tonight. I know he was sought after as a free agent, but was he really expected to put up this much offense? I don't recall that.

Half way through the second and the Flyers are up 2-0. Neuvirth is having a helluva game stopping 23 shots so far, many of them of the "high danger" variety.
BTW, did anyone else realize that the Panthers have the most shots on goal per game of any team so far? Surprised me too. This is a team that was supposed to struggle to generate offense.

Ugh...horrible decision making defensively tonight. Stupid choices are leading to prime chances for the Flyers, and they aren't missing them tonight. Latest was Giroux getting a breakaway on the power play after a bad change following a short-handed chance for the Panthers.
Looks like Boughner has some work to do with this group. It's amazing how badly Tom Rowe ruined them defensively. They were so good under Gallant, and they became a hot mess at preventing goals overnight.

Carolina reminds me of the flames a bit just a few years earlier in the rebuild curve, they have some good pieces on the blueline, mix of young and veteran forwards that are OK if not elite (7 forwards over 40 points last year but only one over 60) and unpredictable goaltending.
I feel like they will basically be as good as Scott Darling is. The rest of their team is good enough to win in front of an all-star but not so good to survive and make the playoffs in front of say... Eddie Lack
Hope Darling stones the Oilers.

Total gong show tonight defensively. Nobody back checking anybody now, multiple breakaways and 2 on 1s. The last one was due to a horrible play by Trocheck, who never has problems defensively. 4-0 now for the Flyers. This game is starting to suck.
One bright spot has been the first ever NHL game for Owen Tippett (10th overall in 2017). He made the team out of camp likely just for a 9 game audition, but tonight is his first game action. He's making the most of it putting 6 shots on net before the end of the 2nd period in limited ice time, most of those shots being dangerous. The kid has got talent, but just not quite ready for prime time in the other areas of the game.

20 seconds in, and the Oilers give up a goal. And then they take a penalty a few seconds later for too many men.
This is a quality organization.

Me thinks this might be a great night. Anticipating the canucks inevitable third period collapse.

Kucherov scores again, 7 straight games to start the year. Lightning are pretty terrifying offensively.
