Vision and hockey smarts seem to be quite a common theme in Feaster's first draft. Good to hear. Better than drafting big, bruising grinders in the first round (minus Backlund and Tom).

Like T. J. Brodie? There's an under appreciated gem right there.

Yup. Him too.

Also Howse......who is finally healthy, in shape and putting up decent numbers recently, with the Heat.

Hopefully by the time Gaudreau turns pro, the Flames already have a roster loaded with talented, productive, homegrown NHL players.

High hockey IQ has been a theme in the last couple of drafts for the Flames. Reinhart, Holland, Arnold, Ramage, Gaudreau, Granlund, Ferland, Baertschi - these guys are not only pretty decent prospects all in all, but they are 'smart' players.

Really like the way this guy has come on. It was probably a big adjustment going from the USHL to BC. You like to see players who get better as the year goes on and Gaudreaus done that.

One detail I noticed from the Rookie of the Month article is that he is now 5-foot-8, 150-pounds. Seems like he's growing. Either that, or they simply used a different source.

Probably the first prospect ever to grow to 5'8", 150lbs.

In all likelihood, BC fudged some numbers somewhere.

They 'forgot' to have him take his skates off...

Maybe. Maybe not. It's not unusual for some guys to grow until their 20. Of course the weight could just be from weight training.

Wasn't Brodie something like 5'10 when they drafted him and he grew to the 6'1 he is now with one last growth spurt?

Gary Suter was passed over by other teams in his draft year because he was listed in scouting reports as being much smaller than he really was.

Johnny Gaudreau was named to Hockey East All-Rookie team, and was 2nd in balloting for Hockey East Rookie of the year

Shea Webber grew a ton after he was drafted.

He was listed at 5'6" at the draft and at prospect camp he was taller then that. When he was being interviewed in his flip flops he was as tall or a bit taller then Alex Ruiz.

Yeah for a guy like Gaudrea the US college route is a good option because with a lighter schedule that's mostly weekend games, he can spend time working out all year long and gaining strength. With a Junior like schedule, it's tough for players to work out at all during the season. Even if he doesn't grow anymore, gaining enough core strength to hold his position against larger opponents is what he'll need more than anything.

Yeah I imagine he has grown a little bit (Sven is generally listed as an inch taller then he was when he was drafted too). I wouldn't expect him to grow much more though couple inches is about all you get. Best get crackin' on making that a well muscled 5'8 frame.

Height is not the most important measurement for Alex Ruiz.

Gaudreau puts BC up 1-0 in the Hockey East championship game. It's only half way through the first right now.
