IIRC, College guys don't need to be signed within the 2 year window like Junior and European players.

From the CBA:
Quote:
(c) College Players.
(i) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and remains a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for his services through and including the August 15 following the graduation of his college class. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such rights.

(ii) If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19 is a bona fide college student at the time of his selection in the Entry Draft, or becomes a bona fide college student prior to the first June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, and does not remain a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain exclusive rights for the negotiation of his services until the fourth June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft. The Club need not make a Bona Fide Offer to such Player to retain such rights.
So, whether they sign him or not, the Flames hold his rights for four years, or until he graduates College (same with Arnold and Ramage and any other College players).

If he signs a contract he loses his scholarship and NCAA eligibilities.
Edit- If he accepts anything from the Flames at all, or has the team for it, plane flight to training camp, hockey sticks, he also loses everything.

Any hockey player who weighs 141lbs and is 5'6 but still manages to get drafted to the NHL must have a sh#tload of talent

Decided to ask one of the draft experts on twitter about Gaudreau today. This is what he had to say.

@coreypronman
Flames 2nd best prospect IMO behind Bartschi. RT @jasonroy12: @coreypronman what's your opinion on John gaudreau? NHL potential?

Pretty high praise for Gaudreau from an expert.

No doubt.

On the other end of the spectrum there are examples of undrafted players without talent that still make it to the NHL.

Alex Burrows.

Apparently Yzerman was only 150 something when he was drafted.. Not making any form of a comparison here, just saying that weight can be gained, lots of big macs.

It's either high praise for Gaudreau or a damnation of the Flames' prospect pool.

It's always nice to have these types of "underdog" prospects that you naturally find yourself rooting for.

From what I've seen of highlights, he's more similar to Nylander than St. louis.

Not sure what your seeing to be honest, the St.Louis comparisons are.plays the wing, the quick stick and release, the darting skating style and #1 of course the 5'6 height. Nylander was a smooth skating center whos about 6'2.

Nylander is a good player too, it's not like I'm selling Gaudreau's potential short. I just see Gaudreau's as more of a playmaker. St.Louis though short is a very powerful skater and plays a power game. Gaudreau seems to have more finesse in his game than St.Louis.

Are you sure Nylander was 6'2? I swear he was 5'11 when he was with the Flames. Regardless of Nylander's height, his game was definitely all finesse, which is what I see a lot of in Gaudreau's game.

Either way, I'm super excited about this prospect.

with the kid lacking height/weight and speed, but having a lot of puck skill, he reminds me more of kane than st. loius.

Haha I guess, but you probably need at least a little bit of talent to score 35 goals in the NHL.

New article on Gaudreau:

http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/20...tCM/story.html

Quote:
“We got a Christmas present early with Johnny Gaudreau,’’ said York. “We were never actively involved in recruiting him because he committed so early. He certainly has all the attributes of some of the top players we’ve had here.

“I think what makes him a little bit different is his vision. He can see people who are open that normal people cannot see. He has great hockey sense and terrific vision on the ice. He sees all 10 players on the ice at once.’’
Quote:
Montgomery said Gaudreau was a joy to watch develop into a dynamic talent.

“He can turn nothing into something just because of his creativity and his hands and his lateral movement,’’ said Montgomery, who said Gaudreau reminds him of Red Wings star Pavel Datsyuk. “He’s just an exciting hockey player who can take fans, and even his own teammates, out of their seats. I think he’s a great fit for any type of hockey at any level.

“He’s fearless. He’s small, but he goes to tough areas and that’s why he scores goals. He has a rare combination of skill and will. He’s a force even as freshman in college hockey. BC plays a very up-tempo offensive-minded game, and that suits John right to his strengths.’’

It is tough not to get excited about this kid. He is third in team scoring right now with 16 goals and 32 points in 36 games, behind 20-year-old Chris Kreider and 22-year-old Barry Almeida. John Gaudreau doesn't turn 19 until August.

My favourite parts of the posted article are these little nuggets:

"He brings you out of your seat when you watch him."

Let's hope this is our first of many diamond's in the rough we start selecting. Lord knows we deserve some luck when it comes to the draft.

Agreed, but not about him being the first. I'm hoping the Flames already selected a couple of those in the previous couple of drafts, guys like Reinhart and Ferland for example.
