Exactly. Got the job done and now the Sharks can look to start trending upwards again with a quality coach.

Hmm. He had one year left on his deal, I probably would have let him coach it and find the replacement next year.

Agreed. It isn't like they will be contending for anything next year aside from not being in the bottom 5.

That 5-0 loss to the Flames must’ve been the last straw.

It's 5-1. Instructing the team to try to score even with only 9 seconds left in the game to deny local kid Dustin Wolf his first shut out probably sealed Quinn's fate...

Hard to judge a coach under those circumstances. He was provided one of the worst rosters in recent history and the results were predictable. Kind of strange in this situation that the head coach would be held accountable but the GM that constructed the roster isn't.

I imagine its going to be a rookie head coach replacing him.

Whoever takes the job is almost certainly going to be fired after 2-3 seasons.

That roster is not ready for an upswing.

That roster would have a tough time if they were relegated to the AHL.

Not sure what the Sharks were expecting to fire a coach. This was their opening night roster:

Hertl
Hoffman
Kunin
Labanc
Smith
STurm
Zadina
Zetterlund

D:

Burroughs
Emberson
Ferraro
Knyzhov
Rutta
Thrun
Vlasic

G:

^And their best forward in Hertl was injured or traded for half the season.

Outside of Hertl and maybe Granlund I don't think there is a single player that would make a competitive team. That's an absolutely brutal roster. The worst since the expansion Sharks and Sens teams of the early 90s.

Perhaps Eklund as well, but it's hard to know how good a younger player will be in that kind of roster.

I'd really like a peek into Mike Grier's brain and plan for that team.

It's like Conroy says - tearing it down to the studs breeds complacency and failure. If you're going this route as a club, it is probably a good plan to keep the messaging new and players uncomfortable so that nobody falls into bad habits to the point where it becomes acceptable or the norm.

It sure sucks to be Quinn, but hopefully he gets another crack at some point.

Draft high and wait out the terrible contract situation he inherited?

He got put into a no win situation. Came in after the Sharks missed the playoffs by a mile, and his first pick that year was 27th.

The Pittsburgh 1st he picked up this year is looking nice.

San Jose has been a strong drafting team for forever, and don't have trouble attracting free agents.

If they still have their scouting staff intact, they could be coming out of the rebuild as a potential powerhouse in 3-4 seasons.

Their first rounder from last year, William Smith led NCAA Hockey East in scoring and scored 4 goals in the Championship game. That's a nice piece to build around, plus potentially the 1st pick this year.

Quinn is an American, who has never worked in Canada ever.

I doubt Calgary would be on his list.
