I think the Rangers have a great shot at grabbing Nylander. They have a ton of assets from blowing up their whole team last year and they have a ton of cap space to sign him long term. Plus, his dad is a Rangers legacy player

I think he's a good player but how good will he be playing on a team with less forward talent that plays a more rounded team defensive game? Leafs have been playing fire wagon hockey the past few seasons and his numbers are probably a little inflated.

What is the scouting report on Nylander?

It almost feels like his legend is growing into a top flight player worthy of the 8 million contract he was asking for. Yet is that what he is?

Admittedly I didn't watch a ton of Leafs games, but I seem to remember him as a talented yet raw young player who was part of the growing and learning process of an up and coming Leafs team.

Now he has missed training camp, the first part of the season and wants the truck backed up for him.

I just don't see the value in selling the farm for this kid.

This is the major issue in the contract negotiation. His top line stats suggest he's worth $6m-$7m. His underlying stats suggest he might be worth $7m-$8m. So perhaps, based on the way TML would deploy Nylander, he's only worth $6-7m to them. But for another team that has less depth, he's worth more.

Top line stats: 20G, 42A, 62P

Major underlying stats considerations:

• Very little PP time = lots of 5-on-5 points; would be more productive if given more ice-time on PP1, which arguably he deserves, but might not get in Toronto
• Low ice time per game (16:30 per game) = very productive on a per-60 minutes of hockey; would be more productive if given more ice-time, which arguably he deserves, but might not get in Toronto

The other issue is that TML wants him to take a "contender discount" so the team can be competitive. But Nylander suspects TML is likely to trade him in the off-season either way because there isn't room for: Marner, Nylander, Matthews, Kadri, Tavares, Marleau all on the top line. So, from his perspective, "why take a contender discount, if you're not necessarily going to be playing with a contender long term?" This one is really interesting, because it suggests Nylander might sign for less if he's traded to a contender first. So he might be willing to sign for $7.5m in Toronto, but $6.5m in Calgary.

For the flames, Nylander would give Tkachuk a RH shot option for his amazing play-making abilities. It would make PP much more effective because again - there is a second RH shot option.

I just hope that neither Hamilton or Ferland end up in Toronto. I like both players and wish them the best. However it would be difficult for me to continue to cheer for them if they ever were to become Canucks, Oilers or Leafs.

There was never any intention of him playing in Calgary. There was a short window where high market teams would trade pending UFA's to the low ones. Toronto in this example got a 3rd for Calgary, and Calgary got the 2nd round pick for "losing" Curtis Joseph as compensation. The Leafs due to much higher salary structure during the season wouldn't have qualified. Win-win.

Rangers traded Leetch to the Oilers, Fluery to the Sharks during this period. Some other examples out there.

If the Flames determine Rittich/Smith is a good enough tandem moving forward bringing in Nylander would be somehow manageable but a lot would have to go right and the Flames would be hedging big bets on weaker aspects of their roster establishing themselves allowing for lower cost; this would be re: Rittich and also the defence of Hanifin, Andersson, Valimaki and Kylington.

Tkachuk is easily getting a 7 x 7.25 per type deal and I think Bennett is good for 3 x 3.75 per as well which brings us to 11 mill and you’d have to think Nylander would be getting a deal similar to Tkachuks. So that’s 18 mill to them and you have to consider a modest raise for Rittich and think about a veteran backup option.

Frolik, Stone would both need to be dealt and Hamonic plus a good forward sweetener like Jankowski to go along with a 1st is a competitive offer especially considering it would keep Nylander out of the east but if we went that route we are depending on our youthful D standing up and on Rittich establishing himself as a number one or a major part of a duo tandem and that’s a risky proposition.

He played 8 seasons for the Flames. It's not like he played a couple of years and then disappeared. Paul Reinhart (who everyone seems to remember) played for 8 years too.

Edit: same era too....no idea why nobody remembers Wilson. He scored 20 goals for several years in the early 80s.
