So far we have: - More transmissible
- Poor protection from current vaccination status
- Better, but not great, protection from boosters
- Higher likelihood of severe outcomes with kids
- Greater chance of reinfection
So, uh, when are restrictions being increased? It's Alberta so we'll make it though Christmas but I assume not much longer.
|
LOL. This afternoon Kenney is sure to announce a removal of most restrictions so he can have the best Christmas ever.

And I don't know if this is an indication of anything, but I drove by the testing site this morning, and the lineup seems longer than I've seen it for months. Could just be more colds going around causing more testing.

I can second this, I called shoppers to see if we could get in (wife and I are in our 30's) as we are traveling in January and they said not yet unless you have a mixed dose or are over 60.

I am hearing minor restrictions on gathering size coming into place in BC today. Who knows. I'm okay with something small, but I would be very upset if government pushed us back to conditions like we saw last winter.
We should be renewing the call for booster shots, updating our vaccine passport systems to only allow boosted individuals to participate in public activities, and do everything we can to avoid a full-scale re-shuttering of society again.
It isn't necessary at this point, but shambolic, lazy government action will bring us back there. I just know it.
Get your boosters!

Unless full scale shuttering of society means something different in your world than all others - it didn't happen. Were there restrictions - yes.

People should stop exaggerating what did happen, because there were clear differences in other countries that would be closer to the ridiculous descriptions being thrown around.
It sucked, and it was damaging in its own way. No one will debate this. But, words matter.

Honest question, when people say "locked down" how literal do people take it?
I mean it's not wrong to say that at times over the past 21 months schools and business were locked down is it?
We as a population were never literally locked up but is it really that wrong to figuratively describe our situation as a lock down when you're being told not to visit friends and family, not to attend school or work, and not to visit businesses?
Like I said, semantics.

While the economy was allowed - more or less - to function, social activities almost entirely ceased to exist for long periods of time. Restrictions on gathering sizes (or gatherings altogether) effectively shuttered society. How can you pretend this didn’t happen to a huge negative effect?

Most people know exactly what is meant by it, but some people like to pedantically minimize it. There would be some psychological analysis there as to why that is.
No, we weren’t actually locked in our homes. Yes, there were very significant restrictions at times.

There were restrictions. I'm not arguing that. Just your hyperbolic language of it being a full-scale shuttered society like we were locked in our homes and couldn't leave.

Even that doesn’t compute with me… I haven’t been having indoor gatherings but have been socializing frequently with friends for the majority of the pandemic. Your statements just read unnecessarily exaggerated. “Social activities almost entirely ceased to exist”…. Where?
No one thought it was fun. It’s like you do it to start an argument that doesn’t need to be had.

But some places did actually have situations where people were more or less locked in their house (e.g. can't go more than 5km from your house, curfews, etc.) for significant periods of time, so hyperbolizing our experience as if it's equivalent to what many places in the world have gone through is pretty misleading. All things considered, we've been relatively fortunate.
