My real concern is bringing something home to my kids. Games for me can wait until they are jabbed. They are already in school and that is providing enough potential vectors, I donít need to add more.

Baseball has been going all summer and football is now entering week 4. It's outdoor so not a direct comparison but at least in the case of football the crowds are larger than we'll see at hockey (up to 5x larger in some cases). Each individual State and team has it's own policy (vaccination and attendance limits) so there should be a pretty good dataset on if these events are any more prone to spread than any other event.

We need to start normalizing normal life again for the vaccinated. That's the only way to get the unvaccinated to come around.

Current data on the age range of those who are double vaxxed and in ICU would be useful. Typically it has been in the 70+ range, but I haven’t seen recent numbers.

We did. The problem was we also normalized life for them too so there was no incentive.

I don't think that's the case at all. It's just that currently, due to our inept government, we need to reduce all causes of spread, even if minor.

Genuine question - do you just not understand the problem we're facing right now in hospitals? Have you made the effort to digest what's actually happening? I think you need to be more thoughtful here because this is very basic stuff.

We have to reverse the growing spread because the ICUs are full. Big deal you say? Yeah, it is, because now resources from other areas of healthcare are being pulled into areas to care for Covid patients. Oh well, you think? Yeah, well some of us have loved ones (or ourselves) with surgeries being delayed, which effects quality of life and has life and death consequences. Do you know anybody working in healthcare? One of my good friends is an ICU nurse and she's is run off her fataing feet almost to an inhumane level. She's been working in Banff, High River and various Calgary ICUs to help out #######s who are not vaccinated.

You need to think a little harder here, guy. Like somebody said above, you can watch hockey on TV. This isn't a matter of us being brave and GeTtInG bAcK tO nOrMaL in spite of the virus. The brave thing to do is give up some personal gratification for the benefit of society by not doing some of the things we love for the next little while. Once this wave dies down, hopefully we'll continue to push people to get vaccinated to make sure the next wave isn't as severe. In the dips, go out and have fun like most of us did. As the numbers get insane, we need to modify our behaviours again.

Live in reality, basically, not in the world you wish we lived in.

Honest question for everyone.

Would you go to the Flames/Oilers game this weekend given the general state of affairs in Calgary? I have tickets, and was planning on attending.

I'm now reconsidering, given some of the discussion over the last few pages, but would be curious to hear other opinions.

Let's say you are an unvaccinated Flames fan longing to go to games at the dome again, watching the 2021-22 season on TV. How much FOMO will you really have if you see a fully masked, 1/3 capacity crowd on the television? Probably not as much as seeing a full crowd cheer on the flames like the good old days.

If we want to convince the unvaccinated that taking the vaccine will get things back to normal, then the vaccinated need to be allowed to do things like normal.

I personally wouldn't, preseason games are usually mediocre at best and given the situation I wouldn't want to feel like a potential contributor.

It seems to me, as somebody that pays a bit of attention to Covid, that indoors is a major factor in transmission.

This makes sense intuitively, as if you go indoors you are sharing the air with everybody in that building as they recycle so much air. This is why Covid (and other illness) can spread quickly through offices and classrooms. You also have many people touching the same surfaces, which could also be an issue, but not as big for me (personally).

My approach to covid now is to limit or avoid sharing air with people indoors. Where I can't limit sharing air, it's then reducing the time I spend sharing air.

Based on this, a flames game seems about the worst possible place to go. Lots of people, lots of screaming, lots of moving around and indoors for 3 hours. I personally wouldn't attend a flames game even if good tickets were free.

I'll change my approach to indoors as more data comes in on how the Delta variant impacts kids and those with the AZ-Pfizer cocktail. I could see attending later in the year if things looking good.

My son and I are going to Edmonton for the International 7's. But it is outside and in Commonwealth. I don't suspect the sales of tickets is high so we shouldn't be sardined in.

Thoughtful responses. I appreciate both of them.

1. Pre-season is bad hockey.
2. Indoors is a bad idea.

The selfish side of me wants to go. The tickets are good, right on the edge of the second bowl, and they are free.

The side that has done the right thing throughout the pandemic is now nagging at me again. But I am so damn sick and tired of not being able to live my life after 2+ years of this.

I have no idea what ticket sales are and Commonwealth is a big stadium. But I run in a pretty small circle and anecdotally you are the 3rd person (family) I know from Calgary that is going.

The chances of you or anyone else vaccinated contracting COVID at the game is super low. The chances of you or anyone else ending up in the hospital is significantly lower than that.

I think the fears are largely around the fact that the ICUs are toast. One extra case that didn't need to be there is one too many. Could that occur if 10-20k people get together in a space like the Dome? For sure. Is it likely? I wouldn't say so.

I don't know how old you are, but if you're under 50 it's not really something I would worry about. Older folks, people who are unvaccinated, or people with other issues that might significantly impact their immunity levels? Well, I would think twice going into a situation like that.

I get the overall concern about the games happening due to the many factors that could cause spread, but from a younger, vaccinated person standpoint, it's not something to worry about.

That was really hard to watch. You can hear in the doctor's voice that he's defeated and so frustrated with all of this.

Footage like this should be playing on every single public TV or screen in the province.

Count me in the "wouldn't go to a hockey game" crowd. I'm not so much afraid for myself, and I'm still doing some in person activities (all of my Uni classes are in person for example), but it doesn't seem like the right thing to do.
If ICUs weren't overcrowded, and case levels weren't so high it might be different.

I'm going to a big year end work meeting in the US in a week where we'll have lots of managers from all over Canada/US. All have to be double vaxxed and wear masks indoors. I technically have a choice to not go, but I'm also leading a breakout session so...not really. I definitely feel like a bit of a hypocrite and will be staying in my basement for a few days when I get back.

I'm not personally concerned about the impacts of COVID on my own health. I'm fully vaccinated, in pretty good shape and live a healthy lifestyle. The seats are really great, and enjoying life is something I miss terribly.

As I've thought this through further (and thanks to all who have responded by the way, you've been very helpful), it really comes down to:

1. I've got kids who haven't been able to get vaccinated yet. They are in school (so their risk is already elevated), so additional risk is not necessary at this point.
2. The healthcare system is at an inflection point, and needs help.
3. Flames pre-season hockey is awful.

Tickets have been passed back.
