Flames Calgary Flames Top Rivals?

Hope everyone is having a good Saturday! I’m a student at NKU and I wanted to learn more about everyone’s feelings on our rivals and why we feel this way towards them. With the help of message board members beginning in 2014, we—the students and professors of the Know Rivalry Project—began answering this question and others related to rivalry in the NHL. No one knows the rivalries of the Flames better than this message board community. Please help us update and expand our results to ensure that the Calgary Flames are included by taking 9 minutes to complete our newest survey:

https://umassamherst.co1.qualtrics.c...=1379&mbsrc=mb

Our previous results have been featured in numerous sports media outlets, as well as the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. You can view those results, links to media coverage, and learn more about us at our KnowRivalry.com website BUT we’d prefer you didn’t until you completed the survey via the link above… we don’t want to influence your opinions provided in the survey.

We use the Qualtrics online survey software for data collection. This academic research has been approved by two US universities’ Institutional Review Boards (IRB) and it poses no risks to respondents. You’ll find more information on the disclosure agreement that is required to start the survey. There are plenty of other teams you can look into as well on the site if you had other favorite teams. Survey aside I would like to know your personal feelings about your rivals. Thank you for helping us to include the Flames by participating and please share this with any other fans that may also help.

Ouch dude.

Listen, any student that is willing to actually do an undergraduate research project is worth giving a small fraction of our time.

I have been teaching students at this level for 5 years now, and I can tell you that even finding students worthy of assisting a research project are like finding a pangolin in the wild. But those that are willing and enthusiastic? You may as well be asking me to find a unicorn.

Take a moment for this. Don't be a dick.

That was kind of fun, if somewhat humbling, given our current relative standings. However, and as always, E=NG!

Fun survey.

When it came time to distribute 100 points to the top rivals, this was how I did it:

Edmonton - 70
Vancouver - 20
Anaheim - 3
Los Angeles - 3
Winnipeg - 1
Colorado - 1
Montreal - 1
Tampa Bay - 1

10% Vancouver
1% each for Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Tampa Bay

I thought a rivalry might've broken out between the Flames and Stars but of course we didn't even see them this year to find out.

There was a time not too long ago where I'd say the California teams were bigger rivals for the Flames than Vancouver. Around 2017-ish.

They've all gotten much worse since but I think Anaheim and LA are both certainly big-time opponents for the Flames (and will be as long as Getzlaf and Doughty stick around).

Where is Kesler at these days?

I lost track after his injuries and LTIR time with the ducks/ didn't care.

I could look it up but I don't want to waste a Google search on that scum.

Thought so. Wanted to make sure he wasn't still under contract, meaning we may ever see his dumb arse sitting on a puck in the crease again.

I don't really see Anaheim as much of a rival. They killed us for a long time, but now they suck. As long as their is no more curse, I don't look at Anaheim in the same light any longer, with only Getzlaf remaining out of the team that always beat the Flames.

I had it:

Edmonton 75%
Vancouver 15%
Toronto 5%
LA 5%

Edmonton - obvious.
Vancouver - obvious too.

Toronto - everything from hockey mecca is jammed down my throat, and their fans in the dome are the most annoying, period.
LA - meh - Tkachuk/Doughty stuff, maybe Sutter as new coach, but probably will die down as these teams haven't played one another in a long time.

This did make me think - I don't feel like any team in the North Division really increased or decreased as a rival this season. I know I was looking forward to a lot of emotional games, and therefor IMO, a lot of can't miss hockey, but I really felt disappointed. I mean, I am obviously disappointed as to how Calgary did, but there haven't been a whole lot of 'can't miss hockey'. Still too many cold, emotionless games of teams just going through the motions.

For me as a victoria resident its 100% Canucks. I feel that the Oilers will never win again as long as Rexall owns them and that rival just died. Conner will never win as an oiler lol.
Canucks just make me sick and angry

The results are interesting! Flames #1 rival is Vancouver, according to flames fans, not the oilers.

Oilers assign quite a bit more points to us as a rival than we do to them. Mainly because of our stronger rivalry with Vancouver.

Flames/Oilers is 3rd strongest rivalry in the nhl but is also top 10 in most unbalanced (they view us as rivals almost twice as much as we view them as rivals).

And the Canucks hate Boston more than us.
