So, how exactly does self isolation work if you are double vaccinated, do not test positive, do not have symptoms, but you did have contact with someone that tested positive for COVID.

Does the count start on the day of first contact? Or the last day of exposure to that person? Every single guidance I've seen talks about start counting from the day of the first positive test.

I could be wrong because things changed quite a while ago and might have changed again but there is no requirement to self isolate as a close contact when vaccinated. Just watch for symptoms and if they develop you isolate at that point.

Someone needs to update public health.

My parents are both double vaccinated, plus both have had COVID, and my sister tested positive on a PCR test on Tuesday the 23rd, and now she needs to self isolate till Dec 7, and my parents needs to self isolate 14 MORE days starting Dec 7 which brings them to Dec 21. My sister had minor symptoms, but is mostly over them and my parents are fine.

Someone missed the boat, because I've gone through the self isolation before due to being a close contact, and I never remember it being like that and this was before the vaccine was available.

I thought it was start counting the day of exposure for 14 days. That is what I did.

That sounds like someone who is still in contact with the covid positive person. For example, my friend's 4 year old tested positive back in the spring. She obviously couldn't isolate from him, so her isolation period started once his 10 days from positive test was over.

But right now, in Alberta, you do not need to isolate if you are fully vaccinated, test negative, and have no symptoms. In fact, you wouldn't even qualify for testing if you had no symptoms.

Yeah, I'm in Manitoba, and the guidance isn't clear for double vaccinated people.

My parents say each health nurse that calls has a different take on it.

And they also won't really allow PCR testing if you do not have symptoms, and of course the rapid tests don't really work either then.

Alberta has almost no restrictions just “shoulds” for close contacts.

How long before a major country mandates vaccines for everyone? as far as I know only Saudi Arabia mandated the vaccine for adults who work with others and it worked, over 90% of their cases are now in kids.

Not vaccinated, you can't leave your house

Had a freak out again yesterday.

Better today. So this could be what we are in for over the next several years. Not a surprise I suppose. In the meantime everyone gets an mRNA booster early in 2022 and the following rounds of vaccines every 6 or 8 to 12 months later will be tailored to the prevailing variants of the day.

It sounds like Austria wants to make it compulsory in March.

Israel has closed borders to everyone. Guess we will see but these reactions strike me as people being very concerned about this.

The irony is that a week or so ago Israel held national emergency drills simulating the spread of a highly contagious vaccine evading variant, which included, of course closing its borders.

They must be seriously worried.

Yeah, I'm worried about how some are reacting to this. But I'll sit back and wait to hear from experts as we get more results from various countries.

There is enough open source information about the variant that I don’t think you can say that a government knows more than the public. So if public experts are saying wait we should probably wait.

I think we are just seeing collective panic and governments want to be seen as doing something even though it’s likely too late. The time to close boarders was two weeks ago.

It might be bad but none of the actions being taken now are because it’s known to be bad.

It's actually quite irritating, because the experts have been pretty forthright in saying the vaccines are still effective, and we shouldn't be closing travel or things like that. Governments are fighting the last war though, and doing what should've been done in early 2020.

And really, the information from the South African health minister (?), seems to indicate no reason to panic at this point. The narrative being pushed is exact opposite though.

There are too many ####ing idiots alive in this world and because of the internet they have the ability to spew their stupid misinformed opinions that influences too many other idiots to make poor choices and then also spew the same misinformation all over the internet.

This will go on for a long time because of it.

The problem is the doctor that sounded the alarm on this has said it was mild. What was missing from that statement was that her patients were mainly young healthy people.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-h...says-symptoms/

She only had about 2 dozen patients mostly younger healthy men, and this is what she said :

" Dr Coetzee, who was briefing other African medical associations on Saturday, made clear her patients were all healthy and she was worried the new variant could still hit older people – with co-morbidities such as diabetes or heart disease – much harder."

I'm not particularly panicked over this myself, but we just don't know enough right now to say anything. Closing the borders probably doesn't do much but suggesting it's absolutely nothing to worry about at this point is just not correct.

From what I've seen, most experts think the vaccines will work and it may end up being more mild all of which would be great.

Xi is a common last name and Nu is to similar to new so WHO chose to not use these.

But that is pretty reasonable. You wouldn’t name a variant Biden, Trump, or Merkel either if their lasts names happened to be a Greek letter.

Two flights out of South Africa had 10% positivity. 61/600. 13 confirmed to be omicron. If the disease is that prevent already it could be good news as 10% of a population infected would destroy hospitals. So this could be the mutation that increases infection but decreases virulence. Lots of speculation on my part.
