Eh, after getting quoted between $3,300 - $5,600 for tankless with install (or a $45/month for 10-year rental) versus $2,000 to get a like-for-like 50-gallon power-vented NG heated tank, it was a no-brainer to just stick with a traditional tank.

I just discovered that my roof is leaking 9 years after having the shingles replaced.

There is a 10 year workmanship and limited lifetime warranty.

Hopefully the company honors it...

Stay tuned.

Having dealt with a water leak last year (kind of roof related) I wish you the best. Also the best thing I should have done before was read up on my insurance coverage prior to making a claim. Do not put in a claim before reading and understanding your policy 100%. That could have saved me $8000

I am hoping the original warranty will cover any costs.

This is not really home improvement related and it is mostly a crazy thought but I was looking at home grow kits for things like herbs/micro greens and the idea of putting a garden in the basement came to mind. Would it be at all possible to break up a section of basement flooring, dig it up and fill with decent soil/compost, hang some grow lights and plant a real veggie garden?

You could just grow in a large bag or construct a bed. I’d consider a small grow tent and just grow whatever you want in whatever room you want. Plus with being able to create whatever environment you want in a grow tent you can grow some exotic things if you want.

It’s far from a crazy thought, I’d just avoid busting up your basement floor.

I think I'd either do hydroponics or a raised bed. Its a lot less permanent if you decide you don't like it or end up selling your house. I can't see "big hole in foundation for indoor garden" being good for resale value.

I would be worried about humidity if you make your set up too big.

You should absolutely open up your floor in the basement for this. Zero drawbacks.

Bonus is, depending on location you could have an indoor pool too.

The beauty of the basement garden is that in an unfinished basement humidity shouldn't be too much of a concern and it would be easy enough to bore a hole through the foundation for an exhaust fan if necessary.

My initial thought behind breaking up the floor and having an in-ground or partially in-ground garden is that it might benefit from some latent heat in the subsurface soil. It wouldn't be a lot of heat but it might help the garden.

I'd be surprised if that would be any benefit. The ground is going to be colder than your home. We use a heat mat for starting seeds and seedlings, because they benefit from that. Ground temp is going to be cooler than 10 degrees.

I don’t see why it couldn’t work with artificial light and a raised bed. You just might have a humidity prolly but you just Jerry rig some type of exhaust.

Anyone have any recommendations for places to purchase front exterior doors?
Our front door faces the west and has no window/glass. We are looking at doors with frosted glass to allow more natural light through and wondering if anyone has any recommendations?
Currently browsing through Home Depot’s and Lowes online.

Thanks in advance!

Not sure what your main driver is, but mine was price. I picked up a reasonably priced one from Rona.

Does anyone know the approximate install/unit cost for in floor heating in a basement? House was built in 2020 and the tubes (pipes? Whatever the proper term is for them) are roughed in…just need the actual unit itself to attach to them plus some sort of controller I’d imagine.

Concrete is a decent conductor of heat. If you build beds on the concrete floor, the heat would still come up. That said, I'd be shocked if the air in your basement wasn't warmer than the ground beneath your slab, so you'd actually be cooling the soil.
