Not looking to go too extreme like some of the Norwegian bands but any suggestions?
This website should be your first source (here is the link for black metal):

http://www.bnrmetal.com/v2/genre.php?ID=B

If you haven't listen to Amon Amarth yet, you should (grab their song The Pursuit of Vikings). If you like that song, just start grabbing more, I think they are great. And yes Dimmy is great!

Try Enslaved as well (get the album Ruun). Once I know if these are classics to you, I have a bunch more. Gojira is epic as well, worth getting (environmental death metal!!!).

I saw Gojira live when I saw them with In Flames, they were awesome!

I listen to Amon Amarth all the time.

For those who like Death/Kreator, you should check out Voodoocult. I think both Chuck and Mille use their talents with the guitaring.

stumbled onto this band thanks to Siruis and the Liquid Metal station (best radio station ever). heavy doom/stoner metal with female vocals, ends up as a pretty potent combo

She actually left the band recently... too bad.

Their album 'Weight of Light' is pretty sweet too.

I suggest everyone get into a "Death" phase. Been listening to Death a lot lately and have realized how awesome a guitarist Chuck Schuldiner is.

Black Breath - Heavy Breathing

They have that awesome early-Entombed style guitar tone. This album is fantastic.

Yessum, JB and Co. always deliver the goods.

In a different direction, I can't wait to see Devy and his band in Vancouver on Oct. 8th.

There is probably more hardcore stuff out there but I downloaded Immortal, Burzum, 1349, Behemoth, Barathrum, Darkthrone, Emperor, Nargaroth, and Eternal Tears of Sorrow.

After black metal, I don't think you can get any more hardcore, I have almost reached the limits.

I guess I can go Death metal, but I am very particular on the low death growls.

Oh you can definitely get more hardcore. Anaal Nathrakh, Pig Destroyer or Insect Warfare (or most grind bands for that matter) would be pushing the limit in my opinion.

The last few Darkthrone albums have been awesome (though they've started to incorporate a lot of catchy heavy metal aspects lately).

May I recommend Diabolical Masquerade? If you already havnt checked them out I would give them a shot. Black metal with just a touch of progressive feel. I'm by no means a black metal expert but I really enjoy their sound.

I've been on a huge At The Gates kick lately... Freaking love their guitar sound/tone. So much bite and edge.

Re: at the gates

I reckon Slaughter of the Soul is the 'Blade Runner' of metal, in terms of its ongoing stylistic influence.

New Iron Maiden!!! Meh... The last few albums are good, but not great.

I'll take the suggestions for black metal and see where it takes me.

I know I can go more hardcore, but I find grindcore to be unbearably bad.

Avoid most x-core like the plague, and you'll do well.

Then you're not listening to good grindcore.
