Lol Bennett sandwiched between a guy who's clearly in a downtrend and one who has never shown he can adequately perform in the NHL regular season... likely getting fourth line minutes. That sounds like an absolute disaster.
I really like Bennett-Backlund-Frolik. Common Peters, it's time for Matthew to prove he can be an offensive driver all on his own like his contract would indicate.
Jankowski doesn't fit on this roster anymore.

He has quite clearly already done this.

This could be an amazing line if Lucic has any chemistry with Benny and Czarnik's two way play is focused and clean. A ton of speed, plenty of strength along the boards, plenty of skill if Lucic can channel ~70% of his prime. It could basically be a faster version of Versteeg-Bennett-Chiasson which was arguably our best line in the 2017 playoffs and a strong possession line in the regular season.

Hard to go all year with a 22 man roster though. A little while? Sure.

Treliving was explicit they would go with 22 to start the season, 13F, 7D and 2G. He said he thinks that is ideal even without cap considerations. ALso said they will shuttle players back and forth to Stockton to help bank some space.
Right now, I think Jankowski and Czarnik are the players most in danger of being moved or sent down for cap reasons.

I assume both Jankowski and Czarnik need waivers. Can’t see Tre risking that. Either they’re on the roster or traded

What has Austin Czarnik ever done outside of preseason to deserve this praise/loyalty?
Why are some of you suddenly gung-ho about having Bennett playing 4th line minutes with 4th line quality players?
I am not salty, just generally curious. To me, Czarnik is a dime a dozen, offensive/ pp specialist who plays bad D. No spot in our top 6 for him, and his skill set is relatively useless in the bottom 6. Some of you have your preseason rose colored glasses on- he is just about as effective as Ty Rattie so chew on that a bit and let me know what you think.
Bennett deserves a better shot than this, and I am usually not a Bennett advocate.

ok sure, then put him with Bennett/ Lindholm and form another dynamic duo.
Gaudreau-Monahan- ?

?-Backlund-Frolik
?-Ryan-Mangiapane
That is the type of lineup I want to see. No more watching Janko skate around center ice like a moron 5 v 5, known play driving/offensive driving ability on every line. Sprinkle the remainder of Bennett-Janko-Lucic-Dube where necessary. I still hope we go swinging for another RW of note.

I've really liked Czarnik this preseason and I think he is a decent bet to play in the season opener.

Why are so many pining to break up the 3M line so soon? It works, and so long as Frolik is here I don't believe there is another combination of players who will prove to be any more effective.

He wouldn't waive Jankowski. He has some trade value.
I could see Czarnik waived no problem.

Lucic - Ryan - Mangiapane
Regards to breaking up the 3M line, it works but I'd want more balanced contribution from all lines and not just top 6.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Jankowski in a position he doesn't play on the top line?
Mangiapane, who has earned a longer look up the lineup on his off wing on the 4th line?

Bad take.
Yes he could stand to be more consistent in the defensive zone, but it's not as if he was ever the worst defensive player on his line last year. He's a natural center so of course an undersized guy like him struggled with some areas that come naturally to wingers. But that doesn't mean he can't be better defensively in year 2 with more familiarity with his teammates, the system, the league, the travel in the west, the coaching staff, and the positional expectations.
But what has he ever done outside of preseason?
How about 5v5 production of 1.61p/60 minutes, which was eighth on the 2018-19 Flames?
How about 4 goals, and 8 assists for 12 points in his final 24 games of last season - which no surprise came after he was finally put on a line with... Sam Bennett. Despite limited minutes.
How about more-than-respectable 54.71% score-adjusted shot attempt rate last season? When other bottom sixers like Jankowski, Neal, and Hathaway were well below that mark.
How about being a right handed shot, on a team where only Ryan and Lindholm, and if you wanna reach, Matthew Phillips, shoot right?
He's not proven to be dime a dozen. I do not believe last season was the pinnacle of his ability level. He creates havoc at ES with his speed and tenacity, he has a great wrister, powerplay success is fickle, and at no point last season was he put on a line 5v5 that made any sense. Jankowski was a limited center. Ryan and Dube were, like him, undersized, resulting in a small line. Tkachuk and Backlund had the most defensive responsibility on the team.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ryan
Tkachuk - Lindholm - Mangiapane
Bennett - Backlund - Frolik
Lucic - Jankowski - Czarnik
Rieder
Ryan has great numbers with Gaudreau, and gives a right hand face-off man on the first line
Tkachuk can carry the second line
Bennett gets quality linemates for once
No expectations for the fourth line, but they should hold their own

Because some of us think it's time for Tkachuk to have a bigger offensive role on this team, 5on5. Bennet has some he can play well with Backlund and Frolik too.

It works offensively in the regular season where it can catch teams off guard. It's been subpar in both playoffs it has participated in which I'm not sure is simply a coincidence. In particular, I look at Frolik and he hasn't had an even strength point in the last three playoff series he has participated in. Those three series have all been as a 2nd liner, with Schiefele, Backlund, and Backlund as his centers. His playoff success prior to that came in a different role down the lineup. Having more legitimate options is never a bad thing.
