Default Game 4: Oilers 5 Flames 3 (Oilers up 3-1 in series)

Oilers 5 Flames 3 (Oilers lead series 3-1)

- Both goalies have epic gaffs
- Flames do a decent job on McDavid
- Flames give up three goals on nine shots in the first before coming all the way back
- Then a late goal gives Edmonton the win

Fancy stats meet the eye test. Flames with more possession and pressure -- Oilers with more quality chances. Markstrom made some key saves; Mike Smith with a huge gaffe while looking around for someone to blame. But given the final score, it's a lot of doom and gloom, and Kylington gets the goat horns.

An hour later and this comment pretty much summarizes everything:

"Oliver Kylington just had to have Nugent Hopkins on the rebound in front of Jacob Markstrom".

That was the hockey game. A lot of things happened to get to that point but you just have to be sharper. What a way to learn.

If the Flames had come back to win this game, we'd be talking about it for years.

Maybe the timing of the Smith Gaff conjointly be better.
Throwing your team mates under busses to stroke your EGO isn't gonna help and just further illustrates YOU are the problem and a slight cancer in your own room .
So good job Mike.
No way we lose Thursday.

Flames played well, and honestly deserved a better fate that game, but Markstrom, as mentioned, has been just sub par and it's taking a lot to overcome game after game.

The other glaring issue is the top line not getting their game going on 5 on 5.

I think the Flames win Game 5.

Listening to Sutter after you would have thought they won.

He was positively giddy.

Markstrom this year against the Oilers

Gm1: 0.786sv% - W Flames scored 9 and Oiler's goalies 0.700% & 0.865%
Gm2: 0.875sv% - L
Gm3: 0.882sv% - L
Gm4: 0.840sv% - L

Mar 27: 0.839% - W Flames scored 9 and Oiler's goalies 0.583% & 0.846%
Mar 8: 0.964% - W
Jan 23: 0.867% - L
Oct 17: 0.875% - L

We probably should only have one win out of the 8 with that goal tending against the Oilers. The teams pretty good to have won three this year

Team is the same as always when pressure mounts.
Absolute crap.

Fire Treliving - Toffoli and Jarnkrok have been terrible. Waste of asset trades.

Fire Sutter - He is getting his ass handed to him in the playoffs getting out coached.
Both series the Flames have been playing the other teams style instead of playing what should make them successful.

Trade Tkachuk - invisible 80% of the playoff games and has been outshined by the other teams better players

Do NOT resign Gaudreau - has done nothing against Edmonton. Invisible compared to the stars that the oil have. Just disgusting.

Start Vladar - Markstrom has been awful. Vladar and Wolf are the future for this organization. Time to let him show what he can do and start him in game 5.

Sit Kylington - showed some flashes to start the season but does not have the brains to play at this level once the skill and determination ramp up. Give his spot to Mackey and see what he can do.

We came into this series cocky and unprepared, it’s inexcusable

Refusing to line match vs McDavid or shorten your bench. This situation is on the coaches, super slow to adapt. Limiting McDavid in game 4 isn’t a building point Darryl it’s egg on your face for taking three games to think that’s a smart thing to try

Anyone else wake up even more irritated this morning. To come all the way back. Just to blow it like that is infuriating

Line match is one thing. But we sure looked unprepared at times. This series should be 2-2. Not 3-1 oilers. I could argue 3-1 flames if we figure it out in game 2 and 4.

I think thats what disappoints me the most, more so then the performance of Markstrom. Sutter is an icon in this city but he has completely mangled this series. Talk about how special CM all series and then make really no concerted effort to matchup against him till game 4, the outright refusal to shorten the bench in key moments, not finding ways to get Johnny more ice time, etc.

Listen he is a Stanley cup champion, a hockey icon who is a excellent coach, i'm hoping he can figure this out and find the right buttons to push to get us out of this hole.

100%

They called game one their worst game of the playoffs then made zero adjustments for game two completely squandering home ice advantage and letting the Oilers build up crazy confidence

Seriously, how the hell does the coach of the year take three games to decide McDavid needs to be keyed in on

Hate to say it but Johnny has disappeared after Kane said they were going after him.

Maybe coincidence but not good on him

To me Markstrom is the main problem. In the playoffs, if you don’t have confidence on your goalie, you are not going far

Or did Tkachuk disappear after his dad refused to throw his hat?

Just kidding

But how do you know they don’t?

The whole team needs to take responsibility for this. Not just one player.

This 1000%! I noticed this after the new year, for example we would play to the speed of the Avs or Leafs ( home) one night and than the pace of a Nashville or Ducks, etc another night. When you knew that they could certainly play at a higher level.

Keep the Faith.

I thought Johnny was jumping last night. Need to see more of the same from him in Game 5. Hanafin also stood out for me.

Stone and Kylington were awful.

Zone entries with possession by the Flames are key to them getting pressure in the O-zone. They really need to stop dumping the puck into Smith, unless they are changing. I haven't seen numbers, but I would suspect they are single digits in retrieving the puck on dump-ins. At the very least mix it up and try the soft dump into the opposite corner.
