Just reminds me of Clinton's doomed attempts to pronounce "Yzerman".
See, I don't get this. Fantasy football or hockey or whatever, sure, but the incremental enjoyment there is that there's a social aspect to it of trash talking with your friends, having a get together to do a draft, trades, and so on. I even get an emotional hedge - if your team is in game 7 and you know it's going to hurt if they lose, betting on the enemy to take the edge off. And of course I get betting on something purely to make money because you like the odds.
But the whole "MAKE EVERY GAME FEEL LIKE A GAME 7" thing they advertise, as if by putting monetary stakes on anything you can make it important to you, that is just so... troubling to me. You're trying to trick yourself into caring about a game you wouldn't otherwise even watch, or trying to force a dopamine hit when something that otherwise would not matter to you pays out 50 bucks or whatever? Yeesh... Find a new hobby; that's just pathetic.
Our friend group has hockey, baseball and football whatsapp groups that are constantly posting our bets, "brags" about wins, tough losses, and good lines. The chat had over 100 posts last Flames game. It isn't always about "Forcing" yourself to find excitement in something else. It can make a game you are already vested in more fun.
However, when your favorite team isn't playing it gives you something specific to cheer for (Just like fantasy) I've actually never understood how people watch sports and "don't care who wins" - But that's just me. If I have $20 on the game it gives me a team to cheer for which itself make sports more enjoyable - If you dont care about the outcome why watch?
For a lot of people betting is really fun. We're sorry you find our hobby pathetic

The guy's almost 80. You expect him to remember a name that was just floated in front of him? It's not like he's in charge of one of the most powerful nations in the world or anything....
They all do it when they ain't familiar with a sport. Trump tweeted about the KC Chiefs making the state of Kansas proud. Kerry said "Lambro Field". Not to mention all Trump's non-sports ones (my favorite is Thighland).

Love or appreciation of the game. Something most fans grow up with long before winning or, worse, betting on winners becomes all they care about. Amazingly, many people enjoy sports for the sport itself.
It's fine if people have fun betting. That doesn't make it any less a very stupid way to spend your money and the constant ads for it any less annoying.

The average age of an NHL fan in 2000 was 33. Today it’s 49. That’s a huge problem for the league. And even among the fanbase, nobody under 40 sits down to watch a full game anymore. Broadcasters and advertisers realize this.
Basically every other pro league in North America wishes they could be the NFL, with its incredible broadcast revenue and fan engagement. A big part of that is fans tuning in to watch teams other than the one they support. The NFL has NFL fans in a way the NHL doesn’t. And a big part of that is football pools and betting.
So the NHL is desperate to attract younger, more casual fans who don’t have cable, and encourage them to follow more than just their own team. The growing online gambling and sports betting market is an obvious source of that engagement.

Hate the ads and intermission "updates". If people want to gamble, let the do a Google search and find the damn sites themselves. It's not that hard. We never allowed pot companies to start advertising with their new vice; why allow this?
Complaints sent to the CRTC... Where I'm sure it will get quickly filed.

Same here, hope it enough people doing it, it'll put a dent to those commercial. Not holding my breathe though.
You're probably better off writing to your MP because the only thing that will change anything is if the law is changed regarding how these sites can advertise.

As I said before. The fans who supported the lockout and salary cap are getting what they asked for.
The NhL has a moral & ethical obligation to their partners (the NHLPA) to grow revenue from every source available.
This is simply the NHL fulfilling their mandate.
Which is why they have a team playing in a 3000 seat stadium next year! Because that’s a great source of revenue.
Did you seriously just take a shot at fans who support the salary cap? Becuase that’s pretty much EVERYBODY. The salary cap saved every small market in Canada.
Doesn’t mean constant gambling addiction promotion should flow from it in the middle of the broadcast.

The constant gambling ads are annoying and repetitive but are also a result of a new market that was just created so all these companies are trying to cash in and claim marketshare. How long can the excessive advertising last? Is it the same during Blue Jays and will it be the same during CFL? Maybe by Christmas in the NHL the betting ads will be gone and we'll be back to a steady stream of Skip The Dishes, Hyundai and Rogers ads.
I can care less one way or the other, it's your money, spend it however you want, gambling or not. Too many self righteous people as always, stop desperately trying to climb up to that moral high ground by dictating how people entertain themselves with their own money.
Chances are, they will find something else to get addicted at and spend away anyway if it isn't gambling. Remember those good old hockey or whatever sport cards, wannabe-traders?
Like it or not, sports betting is not going away.
As a matter of fact, single betting is the best thing that can happen to Canada, the 3 games minimum was stupid and is actually designed to make you lose by forcing people to get greedy.
Just a few examples, Brazil to advance in the group stage was easy money, Bulls to win was easy money, OTT or SJ to lose was easy money, DET or COL to win was easy money, paid for a lot of my lunches back then. Would actually made more with SS back then if not because of the forced 3 games. Reputable sites like William(Mountain) existed for the longest time.
However, it's very very annoying indeed, being bombard by these ads literally non stop, to the point of cutting in during game feed, can't even avoid these with Mario's site anymore. And Cabbie does it so overboard with such a punchable face isn't helping either.
One of my wife’s friends is a policy chair with the Alberta branch of the federal Liberals. After listening to me rant about how they need to legislate these gambling ads for the last six months, she brought it up to her friend, who liked the idea so much that she’s Proposing it be part of the policy platform in the next election.
So if that happens to become a thing, you’re welcome.

TBQH, I'd rather watch steady stream of Skip The Dishes, Hyundai and Rogers ads. Those won't turn into addiction.

C'MON, gambling being an addiction isn't self righteous! It is not just annoying, most people complaining weren't because of annoyance. GAMBLING IS ADDICTIVE and can destroy lives! And that's a fact, not self righteous.

Hearing the perspective that the move towards increased connection with sports betting may be part of the NHL's long term strategy using their increased data metrics is saddening. Sports betting is the kind of thing that can take over and end up making the sport secondary to the betting experience. Not of much interest to me.
Ever have to sit through a bunch of guys talking NFL football? It's just horrendous. Just betting lines, who's starting, what they did last week, who've they've got this week, blah blah blah.
Hopefully the NHL doesn't get to that point, because that's not talking sports, it's the equivalent of a gambler walking you through his upcoming strategy for the casino that night.

To be quite honest, the gambling ads are 100x better than the stupid quest trade ads, and anything that can help me forget “you’re not still investing with mom and dads guy are you?” Is ok in my books.
