So, it looks like the decision to start the series at home was a good one -- so far.

They just need to win one of a possible three in Colorado. This season, they played 4 games in Colorado -- winning 2 (one in OT) and losing 2 (both in regulation).

Chicago has been rolling through the playoff so far and can finish their series with Milwaukee tomorrow. The Heat's 2-4-1 record in their final 7 games of the regular season could bite them in the next round, losing home ice on the last day of the season.

I am glad to see the baby Flames doing so well. Last time they were this good was in Moncton or Saint John, no?

Admitting I do not understand the AHL playoffs that well, why are only 2 games in Stockton and 3 in Colorado, if we were higher in the regular season standings?

To minimize travel, if the two teams in a best-of-5 series are located far apart from each other, they play the series as a 2-3 rather than 2-2-1.

The higher-ranked team gets the choice of starting at home and giving up home-ice or starting on the road and keeping home-ice. In the last round, Ontario chose to take the 3 home games, and lost the first 2 in Colorado, getting swept playing only one home game.

In this round, the Heat chose to start the series at home. Now, they just need to win one in Colorado.

I'm not sure how far the distance needs to be, but these are the series this round:
  • Chicago-Milwaukee = 150 km
  • Laval-Rochester = 500 km
  • Springfield, MA-Charlotte = 1,200 km
  • Stockton-Loveland = 1,900 km

The two closest are playing 2-2-1 and the two further ones are doing 2-3.

Pretty stupid rule IMO, travel or not.

Bust your ass all season to be a top team and get rewarded by either having to start a key playoff series on the road, or just plain give up your home advantage altogether if the series goes the distance.

Idiocy

Can Ruzicka rejoin the Heat, or was he up with the Flames for too long?

Mackey, Valimaki, Ruzicka, and Werner are all eligible to play in the AHL playoffs because they were in the AHL at the trade deadline.

They could really bolster the line-up for the Conference Final.
