Powerplay Quarterback

I hated this trade when I first heard about it, I felt Neal would be better next year. But at the same time Brad has a good pulse on this team. So if he's moving Neal for someone like Lucic he must have his reasons. Lucic might just be what this team is lacking. Johnny won't be taking excessive slashes any more. The entire team might just play a bit taller now.

I would have imagined that Treliving would've asked Lucic the question when he spoke with him with regards to the NMC.
The start of the season is so far away.... The next few months are going to be so bad.

This is a breakdown of the trade. For what its worth, PuckPedia gives Milan Lucic a 9.65 player rating and James Neal a 3.90 player rating. PuckPedia Player Rating is a predictive measure which estimates a player's impact on the game by measuring contributions including: Even Strength Offense & Defense, Power-Play Offense, Penalty Differential and Faceoff success.
So, they say we got the better player.
We also saved $500K and got a conditional 3rd round pick.
The numbers SuperMatt 18 postedand the post of Oilers writer Blake McCurdy really makes me think that the Flames may have done better than people think.

The fact that the extra possible value plus the cash and cap savings go to the Flames means that both the Oilers and the Flames believe that Neal was the better player.

so, what does it work out to?
Lucic/4 more years @ 5.25 vs Neal/4 more years @ 5.75?
Both the same age....
Save half a million bucks!

Wow, is the first world that came out of my mouth.
Why would Tre do this? He is not a dummy so I started to wonder if Neal was a much bigger problem in the dressing room or to the coach than we know on this board.
If you look at Neal's trade history, it seems strange for a perennial mid 20's goal scorer to be traded twice in his third season and sixth season, and left unprotected for the expansion draft (they protected Calle Jarnkrok ahead of him), Vegas didn't seem to push hard to resign him (just guessing, no actually facts for this).
You build teams around key individuals and on the surface Neal seems to be one of these guys, but none of his previous teams seemed interested in keeping him around long-term.
Still not a big fan of this trade but if Neal was a bigger problem in the dressing room than we know of (benching for the last playoff games IMO speaks volumes) then maybe a trade had to happen. For all we know, Peters could have went to Tre at season end and said he is uncoachable, his give a sh** meter is low, bad influence or other things. They might have decided that he was a big priority in getting rid of.
I was curious to see if Neal was going to have a bounce back year with the flames. With this trade and its return, to me there seems to have been a high need to get rid of some rot in the dressing room. Anyways, my two cents and I still believe in Tre.

That is false. Oilers could do it just for expansion draft purposes.

Ken Holland's first trade with the Oilers, BTW.

What a bizarre condition for the trade.
10 more goals, and a minimum of 21 can easily be manipulated.
Neal hits 20 goals and you're out of contention, sit him.

I don't think this makes sense. Brad Treliving may have thought he was getting the better player, but realized the position Ken Holland was in and taken the cap relief and the conditional 3rd as well.
Look, I'm not saying Milan Lucic is a good player. I'm just saying there are reasons to believe he might actually be a better player than James Neal.

Neal has a big ego. This comment was made about him when he was dealt out of Pittsburgh:
Quote:
He wasn't especially popular in the team room because of his arrogance and surly personality.
|
I'm guessing Peters and Treliving did not like the way Neal handled the reduction in ice time, and figured he would be a big problem in the room next season. Addition by subtraction. Whatever else Lucic is, he's a team guy.

They aren't though. James Neal turns 32 in September, whereas Lucic turned 31 a month ago.

Neal is actually a year older. Look at their birth years you maroon!
(Yes I am making fun of other posters, to make light of this terrible trade)

What an idiot that guy was. You sure showed him.
Edit- Now tell him you're gonna sleep with his wife. That'll definitely piss him off!

Are the folks who repeatedly informed everyone that Neal has value as a Leader, concerned at all about the loss of leadership?
