I have no insider info, but I'd wager this is very likely (between Edmonton and Missoula):

Block Heater starts this week, and maybe they will make an announcement then.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variability_hypothesis

No one is out there just handing out great opportunities for musicians and every good opportunity has an abundance of talent clambering for it. Becoming a headlining musician is a 10,000:1 shot even if you have the talent, you can grind for decades and never come close to a sniff of it.

It's a tremendous leap to go from the local scene to world class musician. It's a lot easier to play local shows with your friends while enjoying the comforts of home, so I don't think that can be taken as representative of the talent pool of world class musicians.

I'd guess we're closer to the ceiling than the floor for female representation in music.

I would say it’s about a 99% certainty...

Thinking about going to Shaky Knees 2020 (and now there's a direct YYC flight to Atlanta!), just to see The Midnight. Everyone else would be icing on the cake!

This is an awesome lineup and it's so much fun. I went on this cruise in November and had an absolute blast.

if you can waterslide, surf, skydive, zipline and gocart on a cruise ship then a half-pipe is definitely doable...

Are the promoters trying to get Third Eye Blind murdered by the crowd or...?

It's Vancouver Island, so I doubt anyone is going to be amped enough to kill anyone. That said, this festival seems to have preferred formula of aging hip-hop stars + 90s nostalgia acts. Last year it was Snoop and Smash Mouth.

Sled Island 2020 First Wave Lineup Announced

https://www.sledisland.com/slog/2020...neup-announced

Quote:
The incredibly diverse sounds of this year's lineup include the torch-bearing neo-psychedelia of The Black Angels, the radical political feminist protest music of Russia's ##### Riot, the genre-bursting, boundary-pushing experimental R&B of Sled Island's guest curator Sudan Archives, the out-of-this-world free jazz of the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra, and the beautiful ambient soundscapes of Nivhek, the new project from Grouper’s Liz Harris. On top of that, we have the spiritual drone metal of OM, the sultry soft rock croon of Australia's Alex Cameron & Roy Molloy, the undeniably progressive black metal of Liturgy, and the No Wave pioneering, fiercely poetic punk rock of Lydia Lunch RETROVIRUS.

In addition to these influential performers, we are also joined by some of today’s most exciting artists, including the infectious and infinitely hummable indie-punk band Diet Cig, Scottish purveyors of perfect pop ear worms Sacred Paws, featuring members of Shopping and Golden Grrls, incredibly inventive hip-hop artist Delly, the intense and brash post-punk trio Control Top and the boundary-pushing electronica of JOYFULTALK, who will be accompanied by a live string section for a very special performance celebrating the release of their new album A Separation of Being.

Each year, Sled Island’s guest curator helps to shape the festival’s programming through their own curated selections. This year, Sudan Archives has handpicked an incredible collection of talent, including the banjo-wielding experimental hardcore trio Show Me The Body, the soulful R&B artist SassyBlack (formerly of THEESatisfaction, now defunct), free-form jazz drumming extrordinaire Jamire Williams, who has collaborated with everyone from Solange to Herbie Hancock, Toronto-based electronic infused hip-hop artist Sydanie, transgressive avant-garde harpist/vocalist Ahya Simone, 19-year-old SoCal soft rock sensation Los Retros, Sudanese electronic mastermind Sufyvn, and the mind-bending experimental electro-pop of Daddy, formerly Cat 500.

##### Riot, The Black Angels, Lydia Lunch, Sun Ra Arkestra, OM among first acts announced for Sled Island 2020

https://theyyscene.com/2020/02/26/##...HD4mQuDA4htcR4

Quote:
“… But I don’t know any of these bands!” (Is no longer an excuse.)

That’s the tagline Sled Island is going with for their 2020 festival, and it’s a brilliant one on a number of levels.

First, well, there’s the fact that over the course of their baker’s dozen events, anyone who has attended Calgary’s pride and joy Sled knows that, sure, while there may be a handful of acts and artists with at least nominal name recognition, the good stuff, the really, really good stuff, you’ve got to dig for. Trust them, your new favourite band is probably there somewhere, performing at midnight or, hell, four in the afternoon at any of the many venues around town during the fest.

Second, look to the first wave of performers announced Wednesday for this year’s fest, which runs June 24 to 28 in the city, there are more than a few bands that you will — or should — definitely know.

Sled are having an announcement party on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Home and Away that’s free and open to the public, where they will be screening videos from all of the first wave of acts, along with trivia contests [open book, google allowed], drink specials and general fun.

I wish more festivals would put a more detailed location on their posters for those of us less geographically inclined.

I went to Ultra in Seoul a couple of years ago. Such a better experience compared to Ultra Miami. Got to see Ice Cube perform which was an awesome callback to my childhood.
