What a great understanding and relationship the club and player have.
Joe: I only want to play in SJ on one-year deals so I can reevaluate my body each season.
Team: We can only pay you whatever is left on the cap
Joe: Sounds good to me.

1 year, $2 million for Thornton.

The man just wants to win. You have to admire that.

Nope. Unless he plays for the Flames.

Thornton keeps chugging along. Surprised that Marleau didn't find his way back with Sharks. Would be interesting to see where he ends up. My bet is Arizona. They showed interest earlier on, but at that time he probably was only focusing on the Sharks. Coyotes play relatively close to his home base, so it will probably help him make a decision to sign there.

Arizona makes a lot of sense for Marleau. He's still pretty fast and they run a decently up-tempo offense. I could see Marleau and Hinostroza working well together.

Nope. If that were true then he would not keep signing for that perennial loser in SJ.
In truth, Joe Thornton just wants to keep living in Santa Clara County, cashing multi-million dollar cheques, and playing hockey as long as his body sustains him.

In truth Joe wants what you said but he also wants to win in SJ, he believes they are as close as they have ever been. This is not Shane Doan.

Perennial losers that only made the playoffs 19 of the last 21 years. 17 series wins in that time with one finals appearance. They've done almost all of this in a 30 team league.
Perhaps most interestingly, in the last 10 years they have been eliminated by the eventual Cup winners 4 times, and runners-up twice.
Calgary is 8/21 with 4 series wins and one finals appearance. Something something glass houses. Our glory days were in a 21 team league.

I don't live in a glass house, and I reject the insinuation that Flames's history has anything at all to do for my feelings of impunity for the most vanilla (or teal?) of all NHL franchises.

Not at all. Joe Thornton is living our dreams, but let's not pretend that he is consumed by the Stanley-Cup-shaped hole in his soul.

b. This, however, is a post that adds nothing to the discussion.

He is very loyal to the Sharks and loves the game. The simplicity of playing for the love of the game is so often lost.
