As part of efforts to entice females to serve, Canadian military officers are suggesting highlighting the social and entertaining aspects of life in the ranks as well as redesigning uniforms that women wear so skirts are shorter and slimmer.

Short skirts for the navy and air force......but army chicks........oh my.

Yeah, the skirts are the reason people don't want to serve.

Every time this thread gets bumped, I'm a little afraid to look inside.

I think that the gov should look at a completely out of the box solution to the ongoing military shortfall. Something that would make the rest of the world go, "Whatever you do, don't piss off the Canadians. They're crazy."

It's too bad Trumpsy beat us to Space Force.

We should just privatize the whole thing and make a mercenary army that we sell out to the highest bidding countries. When needed at home their #1 priority is always us. But they are free to murder for millions elsewhere. Embrace the changing world.

Yeah, history shows that mercenary armies are just a bad idea, they have to survive to spend their pay checks and have no loyalties to anyone but themselves.

Canada does at some point need to really have a serious discussion around our national defense strategy and what the vision is moving forward.

We're approaching rust out on a lot of platforms and it doesn't help that our procurement process is horrific and slow, and there's no stomach to spend money to fix it, and when we do, its often either the wrong choice, or the actual purchase or build is poorly done.

We have a recruiting and retention problem, nobody wants to serve in a service that really doesn't care about them, or give them the best chance of success.

Leader after leader no matter which party it is, just seems to plunge another knife into the body.

That's why you make them follow the one rule, Canada first. Anywhere else is fair game.

Canada's submarine situation has been a disgrace since the Upholders were bought. Not seeing a day at sea for 2019?

We would be best off to do with the UK did with it's flat tops. Have no capabilities for a few years, save up money, buy something to restore said capabilities.

Even the most well know mercenary military aligns more with itself than with France.

That's why they fought themselves in WW2.

I know your idea is tongue in cheek, but it isn't feasible

It could be the topic of a Canadian Heritage Moment.

The Canadian military has a record of achievement, courage, and honour fairly unparalleled in the history of the Commonwealth. We should be disgusted by our politicians' continued attempts to walk all over that tradition.

If I have said it once I have said it a 1000 times:

Whats the point of having servicemen and women if you can't abuse them.

It is a tale as old as time.

Something to hang things on - as the British said in WW1.

Its dated now, but Jack Granensteins who killed the Canadian Military is a crucial read if you want to look at government decisions and low points in Canadian Military history.

Yes. And we should be ashamed of ourselves (collectively) for allowing it to happen.

Hmmmm...not good news for fans of the Super Hornet.
The [US] Navy wants to truncate production of the legacy F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in favor of pumping money into accelerating the development of its long-gestating next-generation carrier-based fighter program, the service revealed in its Fiscal Year 2021 budget request.

Next year’s order of two dozen F/A-18E/F Super Hornets would be the last on the books for the Navy under this plan. In 2019, Super Hornet maker Boeing won a $4-billion multi-year contract to buy 78 Super Hornets through FY 2021.

According to the justification in the documents, the money the Navy for planned a subsequent multiyear buy of 36 Super Hornets from FY 2022 to 2024 would be rerouted to “accelerated development of Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) and other key aviation wholeness investments,” read the documents.
If this initiative goes through, expect to see the SH price increase and its path to orphan aircraft shorten.

Interesting story (and perhaps relevant to RCAF new fighter project) of a joint Chinese (PLAAA) vs Thai (RTAF) exercise in 2015. The exercise saw Chinese Su27 vs Thai Gripen C/D.
The JAS-39 performance was at its worst inside the within visual range (WVR) envelope. Over a two-day period, PLAAF pilots shot down 25 Gripens at a loss of only one Su-27. The Su-27 has an advantage over the performance of the JAS-39 due to its more powerful Salyut AL-31F engines, and the Swedish aircraft was handicapped in that it was equipped with the older-generation AIM-9L Sidewinder instead of the current-generation Diehl IRIS-T missile.

Once the exercise transitioned to beyond visual range (BVR) combat, the superiority of the JAS-39 became readily apparent. The Swedish aircraft shot down 41 Su-27s over a period of four days with a loss of only nine JAS-39s.

The Su-27s flown by the PLAAF were operating with a modified version of the NIIP N001 radar that could fire the Vympel RVV-AE active-homing air-to-air missile (AAM). But its effective detection range was only 120km in comparison with the JAS-39’s Ericsson PS-05/A at 160km. The Gripen’s Raytheon AIM-120 AAM also outranged the RVV-AE at 80km versus only 50 km for the Russian missile.

Li [Chinese pilot] stated that the JAS-39C/D’s much smaller radar cross-section (RCS) at 1.5-2.0 m2 was a major factor, as the much larger Su-27 is easier to detect at 12 sq miles. The JAS-39 can also ripple-fire up to four AIM-120s simultaneously but the Su-27 can fire only one RVV-AE at a time.

Gripen achieved 88 percent of its kills at 19 miles or greater, while the Su-27 had just 14 percent of its kills at this range. The RTAF also had 10 kills at a distance of more than 31 miles compared with zero long-distance kills by the Su-27.
"Li also commented that the next-generation version of the Gripen, the JAS-39E, is likely to feature even more advanced combat performance. His interest in the aircraft parallels a larger body of analysis within the PLA intelligence community that has had a fixation on the design and development of the Gripen as a template for PRC industry to follow."

The Chinese used fared better in subsequent years using J-10A and J-10C.

Not a surprise that their production run is ending,

Their current bids to foreign buyers looks shaky at best.

Their failed bids are a hodgepodge of losses to the F-35's and one to the 39E.

I would expect that the Canadian Bid is a last throw at the pot, but with a relatively small run of planes it would likely be cost prohibitive to buy.
