Yeah, it's pretty small, like 5% or something, but they do hold to it and normally throw in some extra little piece of hardware.

Go here, and click on Education Store, and follow the links.
http://store.apple.com/ca/
It's not a flat discount, it varies from one item to the next, and varies from season to season; software that's just resold by Apple, for example, typically gets no discount.
Start of the school year is usually when the discounts are best. I got about $400 off my Macbook Pro (15% or so), plus a free iPod Touch. I know that the iPod Touch offer isn't on any more.
edit: I should mention that the prices on the educational store discount don't typically say how much is discounted. The best thing to do is open up two browser windows and browse both stores simultaneously, to see what's discounted. You'll see, for example, that most of the computers are discounted by 50 to 200 dollars, while ipods are not discounted.

I've used the discount for numerous purchases, and it works great to save a bit of money. I don't even think your ID# has to be current, as I have used my 5 year old SAIT ID a few times...

You can enter a random string of jibberish into the Student-ID field and get the discount.

he spent well over $1000 and got a small discount and a soon to be obsolete (but still very useful) piece of technology that cost them next to nothing. What idiots.

So I went the Apple store last night, and they told me the discount only applies to Computers & Laptops and not the iphones/ipods. So just a heads up to the rest of you guys.

Yeah, they took the discount off iPods a long time back, when they dropped the price and took all the accessories out of them.
Student discount works on accessories and such though, such as routers.

they don't actually validate any student info, so if you're buying a computer/laptop, might as well go with the student discount, as it's the cheapest way to buy.

Do they ever audit and make you prove you are a student?

I got a $250 student discount on my MacBook Pro in September and saved another $120 on AppleCare. I also got a free 8GB iPod Touch (which I sold for $200) and a free $100 printer. That's $670 of savings.
Apple has the right idea. Go after the students. It's a lot easier to get an adult to buy Apple products if they've already used them as students. It bypasses the "old dog new tricks" thing altogether.
