I'm not much of a metal fan, but I recently got to listen to Leviathan, and it instantly became one of my new favorite albums. It actually reminds me of the early Rush that I listened to as a kid (2112 era), with the literary-referenced concept album, a very high level of technical proficiency, great instrumental interludes, and shifting time signatures (though of course Mastodon has better vocals). There are probably far better comparisons for the band for those who follow the genre, but anyway, it's a great album.

Cannot believe noone has mentioned the likes of Forbidden, Vio-lence, Flotsam&J., Exodus, Heathen, Sacred Reich yet. You guys really do not like thrash?

I just figured out who DragonForce is....wow....I am really impressed.

I think the biggest draw for me is that their songs have an awesome melody.

Speaking of awesome Finnish rock/metal bands, here is my current favorite:

Lullacry - if you like fast, booming melodic rock/metal with wicked and agressive female vocals, this is your thing.

Two of their best songs are available for download from their official webpage:

http://www.lullacry.com/downloads.php

Stranger in You
Don't Touch the Flame

Other 2 awesome songs definitely worth to listen are:

Crucify my Heart
Every Single Day

Is anyone into the band converge? More techy/mathy than anything I guess and while I'm not huge into metal I am a big fan of them. Saw them with cursed and terror a while back

oh wow, the new Machine Head album The Blackening is probably the best they've ever done, and could likely be the best metal album of the year (top 5 guaranteed). it's like this album is a direct progression from Burn My Eyes and Through The Ashes of Empires, like all the albums in between never happened. awesome stuff

It's definitely one of their best albums.

After being recommended by some friends for a few years ago, I finally changed my opinion of Lamb of God and I quite like their music now.

Same thing went for Opeth, I didn't like them for years and then suddenly it just clicked.

I've recently started to get into grind as well as progressive and brutal death.

I don't listen to alot of metal and i'm not sure if I would put Pantera in the Metal catigory. But if you like hard rock check out Hellyeah.

Bumping to say that several albums have been leaked online early, like:

Megadeth -
- Leaked about a week ago I believe. I was really disappointed with this, and wasn't very pleased with any of the tracks.

Behemoth
- The Apostasy
- Very good. Most similar to Demigod.

Devin Townsend
- Ziltoid the Omniscient
- I really enjoyed this. It seems like Devin's solo work is always great (and considering how he's quit the DTB and SYL, it's not necessarily a bad thing). It's not to be taken seriously, and it quite a funny concept (perhaps just the idea that anybody would base an entire album concept around this).

I think we have different tastes, Anthony. Got the new Megadeth album yesterday and loved it. Best album they've put out in years.

I thought "The System Has Failed" was a huge step forward for Mustaine/Megadeth.

I think with "United Abominations" he took another step forward. Great album.

Also enjoying Lacuna Coil - "Karmacode" lately.

I figured it was about time someone resurrected the Metal thread.

Yeah, that Ziltoid is a really good disc - of course I don't think Heavy Devy has put out anything sub par so I'm kind of partial.

I think someone else may have mentioned it earlier in the thread, but check out the band: Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_(band))? I'm listening to Pentastar: in The Style of Demons right now and damned if this isn't a fan-damn-tastic disc. I wouldn't really call them Metal, but if you are an open-minded Metal (or music in general) fan...

Anyone else going to see Clutch in August?

two awesome new releases. first is the goth metal band Draconian - Turning Season Within. if you like the clean/rough vocal combo of Opeth, then definitely check this out (only it's clean female/rough male vocals)

and the second is Death Angel - Killing Season. they play a brand of thrash metal with some punk leanings, very catchy stuff. check out the song Dethroned from their myspace page
