Flames TSN: Peters status. Shake up trade. Hamonic's future

https://www.tsn.ca/video/insider-tra...hakeup~1832906

McKenzie:
While there might be some grumblings about the players with Billy Peters as their coach, no reason to believe that any discussion about a coaching change or Peters' future has taken place

Treliving is trying to shake things up with a trade, but nothing imminent on that front.

Dreger:
ongoing speculation about the availability of Jankowski, Kylington, Frolik

Hamonic did not like the way the meeting with the Flames went before the season started (re extension)
Treliving has met recently with agent.
No rush from the player's persepctive
If discussions are still continuing into the new year, might be an option at the trade deadline or if they are in a playoff position might take Hamonic with them

If hamonic is extended rather than moved for an asset, it's just another strike on treliving.

It was a stupid trade that I am sure he realizes will look even dumber when all he can get back in any trade is a 2nd round pick (perhaps 2).

I would rather have a 2nd round pick than hamonic at anything more than $3 million a year. He's a pretty avg dman.

Honestly, Hamonic is trending too close toward the career arc of Michael Stone for me to even think about extending him. Players of his ilk rarely age well.

So the players didn’t like Hartley and now they don’t like Peters? I think I sense a trend and it isn’t a coaching issue.

Was hoping a bigger piece would be rumored here.

You're only getting peanuts for those guys. Hamonic maybe something decent. Better to deal him than to extend for anything longer than 2 years imo.

I have not heard anything positive about the way Peter's treats his players, but I have heard he is Keenan esque in how he tries to 'motivate' players.

Basically singles out a well liked player in the room and gives them a permanent seat in his dog house. Unites the guys by rallying around how much they all dislike him.

If the players are tuning out another coach in short order, then F the players, its a leadership and cultural issue and it will be time to tskr a flame thrower to the locker room. You're paid a ton of money, you're babied and fawned over, suck it up.

And then look how hard they played for "nice guy" gulutzan to contrast that.

This is fully on the core. Character guys would really around each other to prove a hard-nosed coach wrong.

If these guys cant do that and would rather resort to apathy because they're not given an easy time then why do we want them.

He was genuinely an idiot though so tuning him out makes a great deal of sense.

I'm all for moving on from Hamonic. Love the guy especially at his contract but he'll be looking for a sizeable raise and I think we can replace his minutes internally.

Love the guy, but strictly from a business point of view it makes sense

I have not heard this in the hockey community. Not saying you are wrong but I have never heard anything like this.

Take a look at the coaches they tuned out. Hartley? There's a reason he's out of the NHL. Gulutzan? There's a reason he won't be a head coach again. Peters? Didn't have a playoff season in Carolina and there were players there that didn't care for him. I'm not going to say the players don't deserve some blame or they aren't part of the problem but Gio is a pretty good leader himself so I don't think this is a thing where there are cliques in the locker room and maybe it is simply a matter of players are simply getting worn down by the approach. This team badly needs some bounces and good fortune to start feeling better about themselves as it just doesn't look like the players are having any fun out there as it's still a game and it can't be business 24/7.

I think Hamonic is under appreciated on this forum.

He hasn't been great this year but he isn't alone in that category.

What he doesn't bring in terms of foot speed he makes up for in hockey smarts (again not counting a handful of games this year where the entire team has been awful). He broke his jaw a year ago sticking up for a player, blocks a lot of high danger shots and is the only D man besides Rasmus who makes a point of getting between a forward and our goalie after whistles.

I am not sure what the advanced stats say and I am not saying I want to see him extended to a big contract but at the time of the trade, he was exactly what Calgary needed. When we discuss what the flames are in need of, Tre often delivers. Unfortunately, what we think heading into the regular season hasn't often transpired on the ice and I am not sure Tre is to fault for that.

No coach the players are gonna like with how many we've gone through. They haven't responded to hard asses, or responded to a player's coach.

It's a locker room culture issue with the team itself.

I really don't know how to evaluate Peters so far. Obviously there was a point during last season where the Flames looked fantastic, and really the entire regular season looked pretty good. The last quarter they looked pretty pedestrian but they managed to hang on to that number 1 seed. We all know how they looked completely unprepared for the Avs in the first round, and this season they look like the same team in that playoff round.

Gulutzan was a bad coach, and Hartley wasn't great either. Doubtful either will ever be an NHL head coach again.

I guess what I am saying is it could be a bit of both right now. Complacent culture within the locker room and another bad coaching choice from Treliving. I mean Gulutzan was hand picked by Treliving so you have to wonder how about Brad's process.

I think that Peters will gain a lot of goodwill with me, if he maintains the practice lines he has set for the entirety of this colorado game.
