When I saw the thread title again, I just thought that I don't miss him one bit.
Can't say I'd care to seek him out.

You people should not have fired the cancel culture alumnus.

Signed,
Pekka Rocketellio

Edit: the point of course being that with the benefit of hindsight, when you contrast what people like Cherry and Milbury said against everything else that’s happened lately (Peters, Gruden, Quenville, Murray etc) did their transgressions really justify them losing their jobs?

Just because some of the recent events were quite a bit worse, doesn't lessen what Cherry did. In any event, his time to quit was long overdue. He isn't missed by me.

Cherry didn't just say "you people" - he said "you people who come here, or whatever..."

Big. Difference.

Someone murdered someone, so you people should not have punished someone who assaulted someone.

Logic!

Cherry is a literal goddamned stone cold racist.

They send him to BFE every week to talk to a bunch of bratty kids for half a day. Seems like suitable punishment to me.

What difference does it make that some did things even worse? Cherry's firing was justifiable. What happened subsequently makes no difference.

Like the 1980's Oilers, Cherry is a vestige of a bygone era that old timers liked to be nostalgic about. Like that VCR or CD player you refuse to get rid of. He still dresses as if it is 1952 for fricks sake. My ex mother-in-law was like him. Stuck in the 1970's. Fashion, thought process, and all.

The "issue" with Don Cherry was that his fashion matched his thinking and he failed to evolve culturally. Thus his takes at the end his career were becoming more and more dated. That does not take from his value as a person or as valued Canadian icon. It's just that his opinions were lacking the open mindedness and respect for other sections of our society that were not welcome or part of the old boys club back in 1952.

It is 2021 and the old boys club thing is back in the news. It's under this type of closed door, pack mentality that unchecked abuses take place. Let's not go back there.

And it was in front of everyone, not concealed. He left them little choice (plus I think they were itching to do it anyway).

Cherry should have bowed out gracefully 10 years ago. His legacy would have been far different. His act was already wearing thin well before he was fired.

How is this still a discussion? When I saw this bumped from two years ago, I thought something newsworthy had happened... but nope, just bumped to re-argue whether or not he should have been fired.
