This was only the case when he was paired with another rookie in Andersson. When paired with a veteran in Prout who offset his game, Kylington's metrics were outstanding. I'm sure you realize that an all-rookie pair is going to have some struggles as every small error will cascade. Even then, for whatever little it's worth Kylington had a +3 goal diff at ES in 469 minutes and he led our three rookie defensemen in P/60. His contributions were clearly more nuanced than the shot metrics alone imply.

Sorry for resurrecting this post, but it seemed like the most relevant topic.
Can someone explain to me the advantages of NOT putting Valimaki on LTIR, since the Flames are tight on salary cap space and could use the relief?
We already know he's out long term, and I've heard/read media outlets that the team could "retroactively out him on LTIR" to get cap relief, but why didn't the team do it already?
Thanks for the ELI5.

From what I understand if you go the LTIR route you give up on accruing cap space for the deadline.
The Flames were thin and therefore not accruing a tonne of space any way, but they always had the possibility/chance of moving a contract and getting a bigger day to day accrual
With the Czarnik injury I think they were simply out of options and had to use the LTIR route, and he makes more than Valimaki so he's the guy to go on LTIR

Just the interview from Treliving where he said he his recovery is ahead of schedule. He still isn't skating yet though so the time frame for a potential return is probably still 6 to 8 weeks.

I know there's discussion about Valimaki's return to the ice in the practice thread, but it probably belongs here too...

Metrics or no, he's the only Flames defenseman that's thrown any outrageous open ice hits in the last couple years, so I like him.

So pumped for him. It must feel great to finally get back on the ice. It'll be interesting to see if he can get back in the lineup and make an impact still this season. Man I sure hope so.

For those who are speculating possibly leaving him out even if he is ready to play 10+ games.... I hope he plays as many games as possible this season.

The hero we need...
To bump Andersson up and split up that godawful second pairing once and for all.

So many hopes resting on a young first round pick who missed significant time to injury. What could go wrong?

Well at least he's not in Edmonton where he would likely already be forced into the lineup, AND have the pressure of being on their top pairing.

Valimaki plays the left side...he would be bumping Kylington out of the line up.
