Its hilarious that people think the graphic designers are to blame for how bad the design is. Graphic designers rarely get good input until after the first submission. Usually the client says something like "I'm not sure what I want, just wow me!" or something else of little use.
After submission the client all of a sudden has a tonne of ideas about how to improve the design but no original design ideas apart from some abstract concepts that they are unsure how to incorporate into the final design. The graphic designer will go back and forth with the client about 10,000 times before coming to the end of his/her creativity rope. Then they will come up with a design that appeals to the client in one way or another but they have specific ideas on how it should be changed.
They'll be unreasonably stuck on a certain change despite it possibly having design issues, rendering issues, or conflicts. At that point the graphic designer just thinks "fine, I'll give them their change so I can be done with this" because they already think they've given their best vision of the design. Now they are just capitulating to the client because "the customer is always right" or some other completely misused trope. This is how you end up with the Stadium Series Avalanche jersey or the Buffaslug the Sabres used for a few years.
