Default UniKey - New Type of Lock Controlled by Smartphone

This is pretty interesting.

http://www.unikey.com/

Basically it is a deadbolt lock that you can install in about 5 min that is controlled by your iPhone or a dongle. You come to within a certain distance and the door opens automatically based on the signal your phone sends.

I think I'm officially getting old, because this doesn't impress or wow me at all. I'd way rather take whatever premium the cheaply made electronics and proprietary software implementation cost, and sink those extra dollars into a truly well made, high quality lock and reinforced jamb that will last the life of the house.

My Vivint system has this. I never use it, but it's nice to be able to check if I remembered to lock the door or not through my phone.

What really interests me is how this can work for companies that are looking to secure numerous different doors. Work wants to implement some kind of key card access control system, but the cost is pretty high. A system like this where you don't need to spend thousands upon thousands of dollars just to lock 20 doors would be amazing.

Once again a great device or accessory has NO Android support.

Never mind the fact that more Android devices have been sold in the last 12 to 18 months, over Apple.

What devices are compatible with UniKey powered devices like the Kwikset & Weiser Kevo?

Why no Android support? We love Android, too. Unfortunately like many of today’s popular appcessories, Android OS does not currently support the type of Bluetooth needed for our lock communication.
^ I don't buy this.

Bluetooth Low Energy isn't supported yet by Android.

If that is what they use.

I'm not familiar with this type of Bluetooth. I need to do some reading I guess.

Why let reading or research get in the way of your thoughts on Android?

I'd worry personally about obtaining replacement locks down the road - who knows how long these upstart companies will be viable.

Was talking about the Bluetooth. Not sure what you're getting at anyway.

edit: just for fun, I'll leave these 2 links here.

Google now powers 75% of all smartphones sold <---from Nov. 2012.

And this one is a little more recent (April 2013): Who's winning, iOS or Android?

Sorry I misread your original post, I thought you were an Apple Fanboy spouting off in a thread totally unrelated to anything to do with the topic of Android vs Apple.
