I think they're very similar players that bring similar energy. The only thing that shifts the perception of their value? Expectations.
|
I don't agree (obviously, I guess). They're similar in terms of their give-a-crap meter, but Mangiapane is head and shoulders above Bennett in terms of hockey sense, skill level, and ability to both use the players around him, and make himself useful to him. He can read the play and anticipate, react and improvise. Bennett simply cannot.
Bennett's biggest detriment has always been his tunnel vision. His goal tonight was classic blinders on, bull straight ahead Bennett. If he can't do it alone -- as he did in junior, where he was successful -- he can't do it at all, and 9 times out of 10 that doesn't work at this level.
I'm going to say the last stretch of games has been an anomaly. I hope I'm wrong. I don't think I am. But if I had to choose between them, it wouldn't take me a second to make that call.

I have it on good authority that this change is happening next season.

No.
Either way, it'll be the best thing ever. I hope they wear the heritage whites whenever the Habs come to town. I also hope they get creative with future alternates.

I guess it also gives them an excuse to make a new 3rd, so the business side may work in our favor.

On Bennett v Mangiapane:
If you look at their individual goal scoring, they have very similar rates. They're both among our team leaders in chances and goals per 60.
Expected individual goals / 60:
Mangiapane: 0.83
Bennett: 0.81
Individual goals / 60:
Mangiapane: 0.99
Bennett: 0.97
If you look at the chances their linemates get, they're also very similar:
Linemate expected goals / 60:
Mangiapane: 1.81
Bennett: 1.76
The big difference is how often those linemates score on their changes
Linemate goals / 60:
Mangiapane: 1.74
Bennett: 1.10
So Bennett and Mangiapane: - Both generate among the highest individual chance rates on the team
- Both finish their chances about 20% higher than could be expected
- Both generate above average amounts of chances for their linemates
Not hard to argue that playing a bunch of time with Tkachuk, Backlund and Lindholm rather than Jankowski, Rieder, and Rinaldo can more than explain the difference in points.

Yeah, the same "good authority" the rest of us have: a very strong hint to that effect by the Flames marketing manager on Twitter, which has been reinforced numerous times throughout the season both here and on Reddit.

Well Bennett gets penalties for clean body checks and Mangiapane rarely even knocks guys down. Glad he made an exception for Getzlaf
Ooh. They should do disallowed goals too, to round out the bad calls on Bennett

You are certainly right when it comes to penalty differential. Bennett is first in taking penalties / 60, and Mangiapane is first in 2nd in drawing penalties / 60
Bennett has certainly had a history of taking minor penalties ... honestly I think less so this year than others when it comes to the bad stick penalties in the offensive zone etc, but there are no numbers to back that up.
They are different players though. You don't want Bennett playing a non physical game so penalties are going to come at a greater rate.
But why ignore everything else he said with a cheaky response?

That is incorrect. But whatever, Resolute, please continue condescending me at every opportunity you get! I know it pays the bills!

It's not a cheaky response, you just illustrated their discrepancy in icetime.
Mangiapane draws them, Bennett takes them.
Every other stat being equal, one guy will get better situational icetime than the other.
It's just not enough to focus on such a specific aspect of the game without the rest of their contributions. That's always been the mitigating factor in Bennett getting more icetime.
