In terms of defense I don't think the Flames have any issues with the expansion draft.
However they obviously will need to add....

Giordano has an NMC, so he would need to sign off to being exposed in the expansion draft.

Doesn’t have to be this years draft if they want some picks

I believe he has an modified-NTC, as per cap friendly

Well, ya. But you know draft position for this year.
Not saying it's not impossible to still get the deal done, just takes some options off the table

This is correct, BT does not give out NMC.

If the Flames can manage to bring in a big FA or trade for a D, then I think it is more than consideration to expose Gio at the expansion draft. I know he is the captain, but he turns 37 in a week. Probably be 38 by time the season kicks off after the expansion draft. I would rather hang onto a bunch of Dmen that will be with this franchise for 5-10 years after the expansion draft than gamble on a single season with Gio. Probably a good time to transition to Tkachuk as the captain.
If the stars align and Pietroangleo is signed you protect him, Andersson and Hanifin. Add Valamaki to those 3 and there is your top 4 Dmen for at least the next 5 years.
I am also not sold on trading Monahan. He has been a very productive center over his career. He trails Getzlaf by 80 goals on their careers. He is good at face-offs and his 200ft game is improving.

To Hawks: Hanifin
To Flames: Strome (signs 5x5)
To Wild: Monahan+19
To Flames: Dumba+9
To Flyers: Gaudreau+Kylington
To Flames: Gostisbhere, Frost, York, 1st
Sign Hall 8.5x7
Sign Markstrom 5.75x5
Trade Ryan for a 3rd
Rough roster
Tkachuk-Backlund-Lindholm
Hall-Strome-Mangipane
Dube-Frost-TBD
Lucic-Bennett-TBD
Giordnao-Andersson
Gostisbhere-Dumba
Valimaki-Mackey
Markstrom
Rittich
9th pick, 25th pick, 2 2nd rounders. York helps the D prospect cupboard, Strome and Frost are 23 and 21 year old centers, Markstrom solidifies the goaltending position, Hall replaces Johnny’s offense Gostisbhere/Dumba/Valimaki replace Hanifin/Brodie,Hamonic
|
That is a worse roster than we had last year. Backlund can't be a 1st line C, Hall can't replace JG offensively and has injury issues, Strome is slow, Ghost is terrible. That is a lottery team.

A big deal with Philly around Gaudreau + Hanifin would be super intriguing. Philly needs a backup for Hart too so maybe something like
To Philadelphia
27YO Gaudreau / 2 x 6.75
23YO Hanifin / 4 x 4.95
28YO Rittich / 1 x 2.75
24YO Mangiapane / RFA
14.4 Mill out
To Flames
23YO Konecny / 5 x 5.5
27YO Gostisbehere / 3 x 4.5
22YO Patrick / RFA 2 x 2 bridge deal/show me contract
Philly 1st 25th overall
12 Mill in
Try to deal Ryan for a pick to get the free space to around 20 mill and then try and lock up the 3 big fish.
Hall - Monahan - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Patrick - Konecny
Bennett - Backlund - Dube
Lucic - Gawdin - Phillips
Reider
Giordano - Andersson
Gostisbehere - Pietrangelo
Valimaki - Mackey
Kylington
Markstrom
Zagidulin

I think Gio is getting exposed. I’m not so sure he’s taken by the Kraken though. The veteran leadership would be good, but it’s only a one year contract. They might choose a leftover forward instead.

I think they would really consider picking Gio if he was available. They have to hit the cap floor and will need some leadership to start with. They could also trade him at the deadline for a valuable asset. Granted if Bennet is also on the list I would probably take him over Gio.

They won’t have a problem with the floor, I bet. Don’t get me wrong, they’d certainly consider it. But I’d bet they don’t take him.

The problem with trading Noah Hanifin is that the Flames would immediately be looking for a guy like Noah Hanifin.

Pretty much.
Scarcity creates value.
And right now we're fully taking NH and JG for granted, proposing the easiest deal to shoo them out the door, even though the returns proposed are largely underwhelming or are more likely than not to fall short of what the player currently contributes.
If you make a deal you want it to be because a GM forced your hand with an enticing offer, not that you made a deal just to make a deal.
I want a change as much as the next guy but it has to make sense, and not in the classic Cammalleri post sort of way.

You've demonstrated that it's possible, but IMO it's just not a good idea to go all-in on Pietro+Markstrom+Hanifin+Gio+existing Forward core
|
If we only asked for a 7th for Ryan, someone will take him, there is zero doubt about that. There will always be a team needing a #3C that is an excellent PKer.
We aren't going to land both Petro and Markstrom as UFAs, we'll be lucky if we get one of the big 3, nevermind both of them. So the whole point was just to show that it is possible without giving up Hanifin.
