They did try Bennett with Tkachuk that’s why they made that awful Brouwer signing.
Bennett just never established himself here and took stupid penalties. You can blame poor coaching as well. A career high 49 points doesn’t really scream breaking out for a 4th overall pick.

They’re different players
He is a .5 PPG guy who doesn’t get PP1 time like Lindholm did here. Brings a physical element they don’t. Elevates his game in the playoffs
Depends what you value.
He’s the 2C on a top 5 team in the league
Not sure if you are defending the Flames on this. Their track records speaks for itself though

He's 2C because Reinhart is playing wing. But Lundell is on his heels.
I'm not defending the Flames so much as saying Bennett is a little overhyped here. He scored 41 in 69 this year. 40 in 63 last year. Zary scored just 5 less than Bennett in less games. Sharangovich outproduced him. Whipping boy Mangiapane is not far off his numbers.

Bennett does a lot more than just points though.

Both the team and player can take equal blame for his development here.
We needed better coaching. We also needed him to stop doing dumb things whenever he was given a chance.
Geoff ward and Glen are really to blame here as well. Ward asked him what position he wanted to played after that bubble series he said center. So they placed him as a 4th line winger.

Yeah, but not all those penalties are bad.

Gelinas is also a 0.5 ppg sort of guy, but he was clutch in the playoffs. Some guys just elevate their games when the style changes a bit in the playoffs

I don’t think I saw this overhyping to which you refer

Gelinas was OK in the POs when he made it for most of his career. He was Mr. Clutch at age 33 in one series all right, but, just a guy in the others.

Gelinas scored big playoff goals for a bunch of teams. He sent the Hurricanes to the 2002 finals in ECF Game 6 overtime vs. Toronto, maybe you forgot.

Speaking of Bennett, he left the game with a hurt hand.

Nope, didn't forget. I don't pick out one OT goal as some sort of big indication over a 20 year career. Lots of guys get something like that. He was obviously money in 2004. In the year you reference he had 7 points and 3 goals over a full SC run. He had half the points of Bates Battaglia, maybe you forgot.

Yeah, sorry for not memorizing how many points Bates Battaglia got in 2002. I remember a bunch of big goals that Gelinas got including that one against Toronto.
