Chicago has soured on Anisimov for some time, and have been trying to move him for awhile.
I think he was slated to be on the 4th line.

Yet another move Ottawa makes where they dump actual cash money.
Chicago had paid out anisimovs bonus for this year and his remaining salary is just 2 million, with mext years total salary being 3 million.
It will cost the senators 5 million in cash for 2 years of 4.55 million of cap. Zach Smith is owed 6.5 million over the next 2 years.
Don't ever tell me Calgary not being able to swing a deal with Ottawa for Mark Stone wasn't 100% due to cap related problems.

Seems about fair for both sides. Both contracts are about fair for what they contribute, Chicago didn't need Anisimov so get a gritty winger and save some money. Sens had the cap space to spare so they get an upgrade

Outside of cap-savings, why?
Is Chicago that tight against the cap? Do they have big RFAs that they need to sign?
$1.25 million/year cheaper. Gives Chicago $3.33 million in cap space, but they only need to sign Perlini.
I guess it gives them some breathing room.

Cap related problems and just overall team salary structure.
I agree that the Flames & Sens had a trade agreed on that Sunday night or were close to it. My gut feeling has always been that Flames caught wind of the $10M salary ask and that killed any hope of that trade happening.
Overall a trade that makes sense for both teams.
Neither guy is very good anymore. Sens take cap hit but save real $$$. Hawks save cap and spend more real $$$>

He apparently was being bumped to 4th line centre.

This is the only reason...
AA has been a good soldier, and was consistent. He PK'd, he was the screener on the PP, he played up and down the lineup, he was a stable pony for Panarin.
This 'Hawk fan appreciated what he brought, and his good attitude, even when jacked around.
His only weakness was in the FO dot.
But, Chicago wanted to get out of that $4.5M #2 Center contract, and have loaded on other options at C. AA's NTC expired on 7/1, so he was the most likely veteran to be dealt.
Not impressed by Smith, and expect him to be moved near the deadline.
Wishing AA luck...

Classic cheap Ottawa. Since his bonuses have already been paid, Anisimov is actually cheaper in real money than Smith

If Chicago buys Smith out, his cap hit for the next four years is ~1M
If they were to buy Anisimov out, his cap hit would be >3M for the next two years. and then ~500k for the two after that.
So they could pay Anisimov 4.5M next two years to play or Smith ~1M for the next four to not play.
That'd be a 3.5M cap saving for the next two seasons if they go that route.

? Treliving balked because the asking price for Stone was Juuso Valimaki

He balked because the asking price was Valimaki for a Stone three-month “rental”. If Calgary were able to sign Stone long-term (like Vegas did) then I think the decision would have been different....but we couldn’t due to cap issues.
That being said, Stone wasn’t my first choice and I’m glad he’s not here
