Technically I think they committed sedition and not treason. Sedition is an act to threaten or encourage others to undermine the authority or overthrow the government in place. Something as simple as flag burning in the United States can lead to sedition charges. Treason is where you actively engage with another nation state to do harm toward, betray, or overthrow the government of your country. Turning over state secrets to Russia or China would be considered a treasonous activity. While I would like to see all these clowns to end up in prison, they should be there for sedition. I don't see treason charges sticking.
That was partly my point. I dont think these people understand what 'Treason' really means.
But it has a way cooler ring to it than 'sedition.'

Unfortunately their Supreme Leader who inspired and directly incited all of this insanity is gonna get away scot-free, thanks to the spineless GOP scumbags in the Senate. Very interesting after three episodes and they really make a compelling case based on research. Highly recommend it. A person familiar with the departures told CNN that Trump wanted the attorneys to argue there was mass election fraud and that the election was stolen from him rather than focus on the legality of convicting a president after he's left office. Trump was not receptive to the discussions about how they should proceed in that regard.
The Republicans did the vote on the constitutionality of the senate trial as a way of saying, "hey make it about the constitutionality, and we can easily let you off."
But it's not good enough for Trump to not be convicted. He wants to use this as a high profile airing of all his conspiracy theories, even if that makes it much harder for Republicans to acquit him. Don't get me wrong, they'll still acquit him, but they'll look far worse for doing so.
