Can I set up chrome books with Microsoft office?

My kids' teachers are sending their assignments in word docs or excel. What do I need to do to set up our new chrome books? Just a Microsoft Office subscription?

You sure can.

You can download the 'Office' app which is Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in a single app. This is available for Chromebooks that use the Google Play Store or the Chrome Web Store.

There's a difference between compatibility and fidelity. Sure, Docs/Sheets are compatible with Office formats, but there is indisputably a lack of fidelity when using native Office formats with the Google equivalents and vice-versa.

Anyone who has migrated an enterprise between either of the two suites will know precisely what I'm talking about. You are taking the chance that what you authored isn't exactly what the receiving party is going to see in terms of formatting, spacing, layout, etc.
