Probably financial reasons -- which as much as people hate to admit it, are valid, for any business.
And also to finish what they started? They've just put in the effort and commitment to 80% of a season. Would be a shame to have to flush it all.
I'd be willing to bet a vast majority of players would want to finish what they began and have a shot at playoffs, even if the format was somewhat different.

If the NBA can cancel their season, why can't the NHL? What is different about men on ice vs. men on a wooden floor? If anything it would seem like the NBA can afford to do this and the NHL needs the revenue, which would be the only plausible reason why the NHL needs to proceed with finishing the season at all.

I understand that. Presumably people with that perspective just won't watch.
The Stanley Cup has been around forever and can handle a necessary compromise in the face of a global crisis IMO. Bigger issue is if the NHL will be able to squeeze into a crowded viewing landscape with other sports trying the same thing.

I disagree with this.
We are in a situation that no one asked for and could have predicted.
I'm not going to sit here and say I only want it if its exactly as I remember it before. We are going to have to change expectations on how many things are done, at least for a while. I'm completely fine with some level of adaptation. Sitting around waiting for things to be perfect again isn't realistic.

Would rather we sort through our social pandemonium before a recreational hockey league starts up. That's my opinion.

It can't be good for your mental health to only focus on the pandemic 24/7.

I wonder what people do during a normal hockey off-season to pass the time.

4 locations would mean two series at each one. Play every other day and it's only one game per day per city. That would be simple for the facility to handle.
Bonus to this is they could adjust the schedule as the series finish up and not have to worry about availability. So once each round is done you could immediately begin the next one. But I suppose TV networks might have a say in in dates as well.

I'd welcome it. At this point, just having any type of live sports on would go a long way into getting back to that sense of normalcy. Heck, at this point, I'd even watch a baseball game, and I normally hate watching baseball.

I'm sitting around on my ass all day at home, it would be kinda fun to watch some hockey to have something fun to talk about other than Covid.

Getting to sleep in your own bed would be a huge advantage vs. living in a hotel room and having limited mobility and limited services available.
I say no to any teams playing in their hometown.

Or part of the process is all teams in that area stay in the same hotel. I am sure teams would trade not flying with staying in a hotel. I think Burke said the teams typically pay about 30k per hour of travel.

Sounds like all teams and staff, and officials would be in hotels, all persons involved quarantined.
Bettman on Fan960 right now do No an interview with Ron McLean

If a Canadian team is in the playoffs I have a hard time believing that people won't be filling the streets after every win.

Yeah, that's definitely something to consider as well. I believe that was a problem in Italy when they tried to play some soccer games with no crowds, people just gathered together outside the stadiums, which defeated the whole purpose.
