Canadian vaccine candidate delivers promising results in animal tests

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/cana...-animal-tests/

Quote:
One of Canada’s premier facilities for infectious disease research is reporting that its candidate vaccine for COVID-19 has proved successful in animal studies.

The development sets the stage for human testing as soon as larger batches of the vaccine can be produced and checked in follow-up animal tests.
Happy to see progress on one of the Canadian vaccine candidates. Go us!

That Vancouver company, SaNOtize, that I posted about earlier had a piece on CTV today. They are testing a preventative nasal spray using nitric oxide. Pretty cool.

Another vaccine candidate enters clinical trials.

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/25/nova...candidate.html

The Dow is up over 600 and S&P back over 3,000. The stock market has become the vaccine futures market.

Research out of Finland:Dogs Can Smell Covid-19

https://www.ecowatch.com/dogs-smell-...2#rebelltitem2

Quote:
In a pilot study at the University of Helsinki, dogs trained as medical diagnostic assistants were taught to recognize the previously unknown odor signature of the COVID-19 disease caused by the novel coronavirus. And they learned with astonishing success: After only a few weeks, the first dogs were able to accurately distinguish urine samples from COVID-19 patients from urine samples of healthy individuals.

"We have solid experience in training disease-related scent detection dogs. It was fantastic to see how fast the dogs took to the new smell," says DogRisk group leader Anna Hielm-Björkman. After only a short time, the animals identified the urine of people infected by the novel coronavirus, known as SARS-CoV-2, almost as reliably as a standard PCR test.

I just want to say the past 2 weeks have given me a renewed optimism short term. I took last week off work to recharge my batteries and this lined up with daycare opening up again. This week back to work it feels as normal as it can but not juggling a half day with work and a half day playing with my daughter and then working in the evening and on the weekends to try and stay afloat.

I was able to play a few rounds of golf, saw a few buddies while distancing and hearing about the NHL and NBA returns have me feeling as good as I have since lockdown started.

First human trial of potential antibody treatment for Covid-19 begins

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/06/01/h...rial-covid-19/

Quote:
Eli Lilly and Company said Monday it has started the first human trial of an antibody therapy designed to treat Covid-19.

The first phase of the trial will test whether the therapy is safe and well-tolerated; those results are expected in late June. The first Covid-19 patients being treated with the therapy are hospitalized at New York University's Grossman School of Medicine in New York, Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles and Emory University in Atlanta, the company told CNN.

If the trial ultimately shows the treatment is effective against Covid-19, it could be available by autumn, according to the Indianapolis-based company.

Covid is losing its potency and has become less lethal according to two different Italian doctors:

Two positive news items this morning:

1. jobless numbers were much better than expected, actually adding 290 000 jobs in May including 28 000 in Alberta.

2. Edmonton lifting their local state of emergency today. That really doesn't change much day to day but is a positive step in recovery.

Is that jobs number influenced by govt funding to companies to keep employees on their payrolls rather than even more people on CERB?

Good question, and I don't know. There are a lot of people being paid to sit at home because there is no work for them to do.

My work just gave all employees an extra week of time off in response to the pandemic.
