It has been four coaches now. One more is not going to make a difference, regardless of how high he ranks among the resident CalgaryPuck coaching experts. Or rather, if he makes a difference, it will be negligible.
The coach cannot do everything for them. The players need to figure this out.

Didn't see tonight's game. But 3/4 points on the road against the top team in the division? Considering how god-awful the Flames have been lately, I'll take it.
Hopefully they can win these next games against the Sens and climb back up the standings a bit.

It's not going to get them to a cup, but it could absolutely make a difference. But maybe it's better to just never try.
Are you a roster construction and coaching expert?

Which is maddening because they are still too inconsistent. Imagine what this team could do... uh maddening!!!

So, how many of the next 4 against the Sens do the Flames need to lose to solidify to ownership that change is needed?
3 or 4?

I know, I know, it's the coaches fault. Again.
|
In 2017, it was the goalie's fault moreso. Of course the coach probably should not have tossed Matt Bartkowski out there with such regularity but NHL caliber goaltending and the Flames probably win that series.
In 2019, it was definitely the coach's fault. His forecheck was adjusted to by game 2 and his breakout was shut down. Not to mention burying his most effective defenseman on his third pair in a couple losses for reasons I'm still trying to piece together. And in their best played game of the series? Guess what, Smith was ####. That is on the GM for thinking a 36 year old goalie was the answer playing such a condensed schedule. The skaters played admirably.
In 2019, it was probably the coach's fault(our breakout was certainly neutered as it was the previous year), probably injuries' fault (we had friggin Tobias Reider in our top 6), until it was definitely the goalie's fault. Game 6 against Dallas is a sure win if Talbot doesn't crap the bed. Sure though, call the skaters mentally weak for that, despite absolutely dominating the game.
Sorry dude, but this core, flawed as it may be, does not "fold" the second there is any adversity. The only year anything of the sort happened was 2017-18 and they were without Monahan, Tkachuk, and Brodie down the stretch so it was probably just a talent issue.
Sometimes I do wonder if you even watch the team though to make such claims.

Last week the team looked bad in net, bad defensively, and bad offensively.
2 games in a row with fantastic goaltending, elite penalty killing against the best PP, and overall strong team defense (most of the chances against were probably while the Flames were on the PP). Those are all big steps forward, they just need to get the offense going.
I still don't love the style of attack the Flames seem to deploy, but it also felt like poor passing was the biggest issue tonight.
How they play in these 5 out of 6 against Ottawa will be huge. The Sens are playing better, but they're still a disaster.

Do the players pick the lines? Can Lindholm just force his way into the ing with Gaudreau and Monahan? Do the players design the PP entry, or pick the players used?
Having a competent coach is required in the NHL. Having an elite coach can make your team better. Having the bargain bin hires the Flames have been trying doesn't work in a league with so much parity.

Just watched Ward's post-game presser. He said he was happy with the 3rd period...

Hartley was an average coach and they made the second round under him sans Tkachuk, Lindholm, with a much worse blueline and rookie Gaudreau.
Bush league bargain bin hires since.
You get what you pay for though.

Positives for me:
- 3/4 points against the best team in the division
- BDR had a great game
- Overall the team looked strong
My question is has this team scored an empty net goal under Wardo? They haven't yet this year, and I can't think of one last year. Passive play when down a goal is hurting this team.

Very little zone time.
What motivates the players to give more if you say that's good enough?
Low bar produces according results.
