After Wimbledon, Raonic continued his trudge up the rankings. He was seventh in the world in July. He was fourth by October. He finished the year ranked No. 3. He got there by virtue of persistence rather than brilliance, but still.
Sounds like somebody who didn't watch any of Raonic's matches after Wimbledon (especially the semi-final match against Murray in London at the ATP World Finals).

Yup -- I had to share my annoyance with everyone here. It reminds me of another op ed columnist from this summer who said no one covers women's soccer in Canada (which is a whole other story that I won't bore anyone with).
That's what happens when people cover the "soup du jour" tournament/major, but forgets about the rest of the year and what that overall picture means.

She's pretty tough to have fought him off. Sounds like she'll be out of Australia at a minimum.

No kidding. She was already nursing a foot injury and decided to pull out of the Hopman Cup, but this severity of injury to her left hand (and being left-handed) could be career threatening.
/Lucky to still be alive (and that's the most important thing)

So number 4 in the world and a consistent top 10 player for several years amounts to a disappointing career? Most players do not even touch this kind of success he is effectively calling mediocre. This year did not bare much fruit in the forms of tournament wins (1) but it is easily noted the caliber of players Milos was able to beat this year on a consistent basis, in some very big events. If not for the freak, Andy Murray, Raonic would ccertainly have had 2-3 rather massive wins....who else on tour is beating Murray at this point and time? The next few seasons are going to pay massive dividends if he stays healthy.
I wonder how would Kelly describe his sub mediocre accomplishments as a journalist to date? Personally, I'd put him somewhere between a Vasek Pospisil and a Donald Brown.

Pretty good news regarding Petra Kvitova...
PRAGUE, Czech Republic — Petra Kvitova could return to tennis in about six months, the surgeon who operated on the two-time Wimbledon champion’s left hand said Wednesday.
Kvitova was injured Tuesday when a knife-wielding intruder attacked her at her home in the town of Prostejov. The attacker is still at large and police have asked the public for help.
Kvitova underwent nearly four hours of surgery on Tuesday at a specialized clinic in the northern town of Vysoke nad Jizerou.
"When we talk about (playing tennis), it will take about six months," said surgeon Radek Kebrle of the Hand and Plastic Surgery Institute. "It’s a serious injury and we have to deal with that accordingly.
"She's young and healthy and has long, slim fingers," he said. "That's a good prognosis."

Ana Ivanovic has retired today. She had a decent career but certainly I'm sure she will have lots of what ifs, she probably should have won another major or two. Though I'd certainly be happy if Genie's career were as good as hers.

Congrats to Serena...
Tennis great Serena Williams and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian are engaged.
A spokesperson for Ohanian confirmed that he popped the question while the two were vacationing in Rome. Williams first announced the news herself in a Reddit post on its "r/isaidyes" forum.
