Great thread, don’t listen to the naysayers. It’s hard to believe but yes they are contenders for the cup. They have a fantastic team with very few warts. They have depth players that haven’t even gotten going yet. Lots of the top guys have had a few sniffs of playoff action and now have a better idea of what it takes.

Biggest question is goaltending but I believe in Rittich.

Which in turn means they are SC contenders. Any team that makes the dance can win it and we have seen it many times before. Once you are a playoff team you are a SC contender.

No. Not without a goaltender. They find a goaltender that can make the big save consistently and they jump into the contender pool. Make Smith is not that guy, and David Rittich has yet to prove any consistency. Flames need to cut bait on Smith and look for another goaltender.

This is a year where if they're firmly above the playoff line, they could pick up a highly skilled rental at the deadline and really make a push for it.

I think Rittich is inching closer to being able to be the guy. Pretty sure he's well above .900 in his games except for a 3rd period against Pittburgh and last game against the Stars. Let's hope he continues that trend, but we won't know unless we stop this agenda of shoehorning Smith in at every opportunity and really give him the chance to run with it.

"any" consistency? Well that's a BS claim. He doesn't have a huge sample size but he's been highly consistent in the NHL games he has played. If he were not consistent, he wouldn't have the single highest quality start % of any active goalie with as many starts:

Yeah, of course he needs to keep at it and build up his resume, that's true of any goalie with only 27 career starts. The goalies with the proven resumes you seem to want are unobtainium. Rittich will have ups and downs going forward, look at the above list even damn good starters have only posted QS% close to the 58% mark, which is the mark of a quality starter. ALL goalies go on hot streaks and cold streaks, however you want to label them whether that's a #1 or a #1A or a #B. Often these hot/cold streaks tie in with the play of the skaters in front of them, too. But to say he has yet to prove "any" consistency is a blatant lie.

They've beat both Colorado and Nashville in their own barns. So should they make it to the Western Conferce final I think they could win it.

I wonder what the current Flames look like in playoff rules hockey..

I would add that their powerplay has to be more consistent.

Going 0 for 3 and 0 for 5 will kill you in the playoffs.

I think this year it would be nice to see them comfortably make the playoffs and win 1-2 rounds. In the off-season, it would be nice if they can a goalie (dont fully trust Rittich yet) and another top 6/9 player.

Sign one of Bobrovsky, Varlamov, or Talbot

Sign one of Eberle or Hayes

Trade Frolik and Stone for picks

2019-2020
Gaudreau-Lindholm-Neal
Tkachuk-Monahan-Eberle/Hayes
Bennett-Backlund-Ryan
Dube-Jankowski-Mangiapane

Brodie-Giordano
Hanifin-Valimaki
Andersson-Hamonic
Kylington

Talbot/Bob/Varlamov
Rittich

...Then if Neal doesn't do well, hope he gets picked up by Seattle

If Rittich straight steals Smith's job, they're a contender. If they go into the playoffs with Smith still sorta the guy, they're not. If David Rittich is your unquestionable number 1 by March, yes.

Contenders, but not favourites. They look like they have a good shot at making the playoffs in a weak division, so less than 2nd round would be disappointing, and making the 3rd round is certainly possible.

Let's make the playoff first before making this thread. This season has been fun and we've been playing well but I don't want us to hype ourselves up and then have it blow up in our faces if expectations aren't met.

What's particularly encouraging so far is the goal differential. Nice to see the Flames on the positive side despite the level of goaltending we've sometimes had.

I don't think it's a sure thing they will make the playoffs so no. I think they will make the playoffs but I don't think they will win the division and will probably have to face the Ducks or Sharks in the first round and I don't have faith they can beat those teams in a best of 7 game series. I think this season is a step in the right direction and if they can improve the goaltending over the summer their window will be open as a contender.

I was talking with a few of my buddies over the summer and we optimistically said that our team could easily be this years Jets. A team that looks strong on paper and finally brings it all together. Our team has 5 top 6 picks from the 13-16 drafts and they are all looking pretty good. They have a top 3 player from the 2011 draft and an ageless Franchise Dman having his best season yet at 35.

This team is right now on the cusp of becoming a contender but they will need to keep this up for all 82 games and show well in the playoffs to be considered a contender moving forward.

YES we are CUP CONTENDERS!! Only our goal ending will let us down. In fact our goaltending scares me!!!

BTW on an unrelated note

MARC ANDRE FLEURY is the 3rd Star of the month. This guy is amazing!!!

Not to mention that 9-1 game against Pittsburgh

No team scores a powerplay goal every game.

They aren’t a favourite, so not in the top 3/4 you’d expect to win but they are in that next tier. They are a playoff team not a bubble team. Comfortably making the playoffs and could go on a run. Effectively being above the snake for the whole season.
